The 'strengthening required' is a bit of a myth: Team Gunston Z181 and A2 are both 4 cyl shells - still going strong 40 racing year later. Z181 has suffered some fatigue cracking in the firewall. Peranaman's car is also a 4 cyl shell.

Production Peranas were same as 3000 XL with the addition of the strut top stenthening. The strut top stenthening plates are a standard Ford part fitted in some markets. I have a German Cologne built Mk1 1600 shell that has the exact same plates as a Perana.

A Perana's front cross member is arguably less strong the than the standard one. Engine cross member is the same, just steering rack mountings moved.

If it was me I would just get the strut top strengthening plates and be done with it.

I'm working on a serious but cheap upgrade. Brake parts: looks like I can get big vented disks and 4 pot calipers for less than £100 per side. There will be brackets, machining, pads and pipes on top of that, but my target is to get (well) below £200 per side.

Busy with a spec for 5 stud 15", but if anyone cares to measure the disk that will fit inside the ID of 13" rims I will see what I can come up with for 4 stud 13"

The Perana engine crossmember is significantly modified from the origional and because of cloning I don't won't elaborate here but I have built one for a friend who got ripped off on a Perana purchase using my own as a pattern.
I will PM you pics for your records if you want John.

Paul,

I know (and should have said) that the mountings are quite different. What I mean is that strength-wise there is no significant difference. It is after all a modified 3 litre item.

Yes, please PM me pics - I can never have enough.

Hi Denis, some good progress there.

While your on the bodywork you are going to need to do a mod to your front crossmember to clear the V8 pulley.
Have a look at my unfinished thread in 'Restoration' titled 'Capri Perana gets a tarting up' for pics of mine.
I also modded my slam panel but that depends on the size of radiator you are going to use. It might be worth getting a radiator now so you don't have to return to it later.

here is a pic of what i'm talking about
