Exclusive vs Inclusive events
Very simple thread based on another recent thread which I dont think many people saw. I am genuinely interested in which way this one goes. At the end of the it I think a clear picture of the car scene in SA will be presented.
Just to be clear by events I am talking about drives and shows, would you go to a show where there were non muscle cars, where there expensive exotics, where there golfs. Or do you prefer shows where only certain people are allowed to exhibit.
I would be especially interested in the motivation of the latter choice and yes I think this topic may become a bit "heated" as far as my views go I will attempt to avoid anything too controversial but I will admit the general views of a few members in the last thread did cause some concern at the apparent "exclusive attitude" shown by some.

Re: Exclusive vs Inclusive events
Inclusive/exclusive etc.....
I am personally not very fond of mixing old and new. I like to go to a "Ferrari" show and envy what I can't afford.
But then I am at home at an "old car" show, by that I do not mean 19voertsek model T's. I am a 50, 60, 70's enthusiast and like to mingle with like-minded people.
I can't afford new age stuff and cannot give proper advice on them so I tend to stand back
So yeah mixing old and new does not really work for me personally.

Re: Exclusive vs Inclusive events
I must unfortunately admit that in smaller communities like ours, it would be difficult to have an exclusive old car event though. Geez, we only have about 3 events per year!
Still, mixing old and new does not do it for me....

What would happen if Lumina's were included in a typical "classic show"FPT wrote:Inclusive/exclusive etc.....

Some of the nicest V8s I have seen have come from Bloem, your Fairmont, the V8 Lupini Sapphire, the yellow Perana are among some the best I have seen.FPT wrote:I must unfortunately admit that in smaller communities like ours, it would be difficult to have an exclusive old car event though. Jacques: I would be interested as to why you are asking the question. The query (and especially the poll) without any context is, in my opinion, not particularly useful because eveyone's interpretation of the simple question could vary widely. An in reply to your second paragraph question - I would rather turn up to see a wide range of cars - some rubbish - with some really special cars in amongst them, than turn up and only find three or five cars because eveyone thought the organisers may be too strict.
---
My take:
This is not an either or. Depends on the event or occasion of course.
Casual meet at a road house, non-themed days at places like Piston Ring. AMC meet ups, show and shine events - bring what you have. Why exclude someone because the don't have a car or their car is not to your taste or their appropiate car is not running (or is in a different country)?
More formal events and shows - like an event at Franschhoek Motor Museum or Goodwood Revival (pre-66 or park in the modern car park) or Capri 40th Anniversary or Ferrari Club - be as strict as you like.
I'd rather see people, with or without interesting cars, than not see them
The most important thing is people's love and interest in cars. You or I may not be personally into rods or ricers or bog standard concours cars, but many of these cars and their owners are interesting and often surprising (in a good way) in one way or another.
If an organiser wants their event to be strictly themed, by age, or style, or other criteria then they should specify the criteria clearly, well in advance. If it really important then have a formal sign-up entry system BEFORE the event - no booking, no entry.
If you want to have a 'turn up on the day' type event AND you want to stick rigidly to your theme you need several things:

If you want to have a 'turn up on the day' type event AND you want to stick rigidly to your theme you need several things:
- * Specify your criteria well in advance and publicise them widely
* Invite people to check by phone or email before the event if their car will get in
* Make it clear that the organisers' decision is final
* Make sure your selectors at the gate have a clue, are unbiased, prepared for the unexpected but great car, etc. etc.
* Provide an alternative parking, gathering point for cars that are not accepted into the main show area, accessible from the main gate and viewable by the public who have come to see. People may have driven miles to the event. The last thing they want after being 'rejected' is to be give the run around. Also you then get a field of alternative cars. If you are smart you will go and see which of these cars get attention - might be useful for your selectors at the next meet/show

Took the liberty of bolding your text John. I'd like to understand that too....zahistorics wrote:Jacques: I would be interested as to why you are asking the question. As for the whole post:
Where's the "Like" button? You put it quite succinctly.
Static shows are one thing. Dynamic ones something else again. A modern high performance sedan at a traditonal inspired reliability run? A 308 at a dirt oval event? A bagged Navarra at a Low-rider cruise? Not feeling the love I am afraid.....each to his own.

Re: Exclusive vs Inclusive events
Hi guys, Is the site not called African muscle cars because I took it that this is what it's about. Methinks the original feeling was typically a Perana or Can Am. But have you ever driven a Triumph TR8 or a Sunbeam Tiger with that sweet little 260 Ford v8! I think a muscle car typically scares the daylights out of one because of big power, no handling or brakes and wicked fuel consumption.More typically when you are doing 200 kph it feels like it because the racket and the beasr trying to get away from you.
With respect the modern sceamers are so quiet and comfortable at high speed that when they do let go it's a much bigger off!!
In the end if it goes like hell and is available to be bought in RSA from a dealer then it's still a muscle car.
