289 Ford V8 setup

Post by jacodebeer » Thu 15 Apr 2010, 09:13

Hi all

Could you please help me?
My dad has got a 289 Ford V8 that he wants to transplant into his Ford Courier,
Can any of you help me with advice on, what would be the best setup for the engine (intake) and gearbox, diff ect. combination?
And where will I be able to find parts for this engine, it seems to be quite scarce? :|

Any help would be appreciated.

Hallo.
See you are from Randfontein.
There are people doing conversions ect.
Have you seen this Cortina driving around?
It has a 302 Ford motor in it.

Now I can't remember the name of who did the conversion.
Danie ..... Panelbeaters or conversions in Randfontein.

Also look in Restoration section.

Fanie ,Rassie , Burt ect would be able to help. send them a PM.

As for spares give Thundersport in Pinetown, RS Performance, US Connection,Motown Auto ECT. a call or e-mail.
They advertise in Speend and sound/ S.A. HOTRODS.

Contact Novel Ford in Paarl.

They used to fit 302 V8's into new Couriers and sell them as dealer modified vehicles.

They should be able to give you all the info you require.

Agreed the Novel conversions were very well done. Nearly bought a Novel Sapphire a while back

Jaco,

In case you don't know, other than capacity, 289 is almost identical to a 302.

As far as I know the Novel conversions used the T5 gearbox. 302 to T5 gearbox with associated bell hosings were used on Fox bodied Mustangs amongst other things, so are fairly common.

Bit of nitpicking here but the Novel cars actually used a much improved T5 as to what was used in the XR8. Have the details in the road test which I am trying to locate.

Mustang Fox body T5 is what is knows as a T5 WC (World Class) - higher torque rating than the T5's used in various Sierras, Sapphires etc.

Don't know what Novel used, but probably the same box.

Nowdays you can get further uprated T5s. Often called T5 Z.

Cheers

"the gearbox used is a forerunner of the famous Borg Warner T5 used in the XR8. The gearbox is known as the Cosworth/BorgWarner "short selector"and features a delightful short throw shift action that is far more positive than the T5" as per the road test. :)
