Gearbox identification

Post by irpac » Mon 08 Jul 2019, 21:13

Hi

Please help identify, I bought this manual 3 speed transmission mated to a 351C, looking around on the internet it seems to a be a 3 speed top loader according to the 9 bolts on the cover. Never heard of a 3 speed top loader, is this correct?
Also I would have thought that the linkages / selectors would be on the left side of the gearbox if a top loader. The previous owner hacked the gearshift and ran it with 2 rods welded onto the mechanism, 1 for R & 1 and another for 2 & 3. I can find the cast number but not the plate for the identification number. The bell housing bolts on with 4 bolts, not 8 like a 4 spd top loader.

Thanks

I think it's called a top loader as the access cover is on top where you 'load' the gears into.
As you say the four speed has the linkages on the left hand side.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I will keep it, it should hold up behind the 351. Anyone have a set of linkages and gearshift for sale?
