A year with a Supercharged Lumina
Its been quite fun.
It has taken me quite a while to try and get used to this Australian/South African monster. Unlike many I didn't buy the car to drag to race but I hoped it might be exceptional for long country drives and I also wanted something that would be an event every time I drove it.
The event part is a given with a 76mm exhaust and the ability to set of car alarms when idling along. The lump cam ensure the car rocks like a proper old school muscle car but when you settle down it will cruise at highway speeds, yes you always hear the V8 but I wouldn't have it any other way.
Its possible to cruise around driving on torque. Then you come up behind two trucks and a bakkie towing a trailer. Pull out and put your foot half way down and good grief the auto box kicks down and your slammed back as you blast past everything. Easy.
Open road at 130 km/h I get 13.6 litres per 100 which isn't too bad, ok that is if I resist blasting up to higher speeds...even then early 15's is the norm.
Overall its exactly what I hoped it would be, a throwback to the age of V8's, long roads and dare I say it cheap fuel. In a world full of efficiency hybrid this and that its telling that this Australian brings so many smiles to so many peoples faces.
I'll try remember to take a video clip this weekend.

Re: A year with a Supercharged Lumina
Yup, it's a pretty nice car to have.
Weirdly enough, I don't miss mine much.
The only 2 things I won't mind again, is the cold start up noise, and the effortless overtaking ability.

Re: A year with a Supercharged Lumina
That sounds like a fun driver, I have been considering getting one for some time now and have gone to view/drive a few SSV's, but I must admit in "standard" trim it is a bit disappointing - the brakes in particular (maybe I am just spoilt with BBC 58 ).
Anyone had some good results on brake upgrades done on these Lumina's?

I had Powerbrake's big brake kit, which was awesome.Chev58 wrote:That sounds like a fun driver, I have been considering getting one for some time now and have gone to view/drive a few SSV's, but I must admit in "standard" trim it is a bit disappointing - the brakes in particular (maybe I am just spoilt with BBC 58 ).

Lumi-fan, now that looks proper.
How much improvement did this make?
BTW, that old disc of yours is toasted - exactly what I felt when I drove the 3 samples.

I am also running the same big brake kit that Lumi fan had on his car. I haven't drive one with standard brakes so I cant really compare the difference but what I will say is the brakes work well and exceptionally well when hot.Chev58 wrote: ↑Wed 19 Sep 2018, 18:18That sounds like a fun driver, I have been considering getting one for some time now and have gone to view/drive a few SSV's, but I must admit in "standard" trim it is a bit disappointing - the brakes in particular (maybe I am just spoilt with BBC 58 ).

That disc was 2 years old when the photo was taken. The brakes are the single biggest weak point on the car, it is simply too small.Chev58 wrote:Lumi-fan, now that looks proper.

The improvement was night and day. I fitted those when the charger was fitted. In hindsight, it should have been the first mod on the car.

Good to hear, thanks for the feed back guys.
My search for a UTE will continue.

We should have an AMC meet up again. I'll take you for a spin, problem is after that you wont want a standard car!
