Great colour.
I do appriacte the original concour restoration.
But as you mention how things were done in those days you can see the car industry has come a long way.
Dont you have an itch sometimes to improve stuff?

I help Brennon with the last Mustang and I can tell you he is a perfectionist! Put a laptop next to me when I was under the dash with a full wiring diagram.
Had a overheating problem in Durban and ask me to strip and check the engine for damage. It was actually just a remove , clean and fit. He is full of SS but get what he want. Well done my friend!! I take my hat off for you.

I genuinely wonder how many restorations in SA are done to this exceptional standard. I was involved with one a few years ago, more from the perspective of finding parts and going for all out originality.

Hi guys, thank you all for your positive comments and support, especially coming from you guys as we are all car fanatics and all a knowledgeable and passionate bunch.
Yes I do try and as Rassie says full of BS.. haha Rassie ! But I guess you need a large amount of OCD to be in this hobby which takes a lot of dedication. People say it takes money and it does but without the dedication it means nothing to get it done.
Barry yes I am very much a guy who likes to mod and improve a car or bike, chop and custom are two of my favourite words. But when I started out this project I knew what the car was and being so rare and most importantly desirable I thought there is only one way to do it and thats back to as factory original. Its not everyday you going to see a big block GT 390 Fastback in its a original Dark Moss Green paint even in the USA so over this side of the world even more so. Any other fastback would have coil overs a EFI motor and the rest of the go fast, handle on rails parts.
In the long run I think the car will be worth more as stock original as if you make a restomod or protouring style car (with protouring cars fetching huge money right now) they do become very dated and with performance upgrades todays state of the art suspension and motors becomes yesterdays throw away quite quickly. Original however will always be just that.
Doing the work I often had to double take on the finishes done on the inside and underside of the car as yes it needs to be quite sloppy. The guys at concours mustang often telling me that its too neat. needs more overspray, more runs, seam sealer to not be so smooth etc etc
ZA Perana - On the Mustang side of things I dont think too many if any, not blowing my trumpet but its more about the times we live in now and with the age of the internet and forums us poor souls in SA in the past even say 5 years ago have lacked for information and knowledge about what was done back in the day and we certainly would not have access to the database of knowledge and photo references that is currently available to people like me. Things were done so differently back in the day that from Fords manufacturing plant for Mustang they had different standards, as an example my cars a Dearborne car and the undercarriage is painted Slop grey- which is the left over paint mixed up to a wide range of grays, then San Jose and Metuchen the orther 2 pants panted theirs Red oxide. Huge variations in standards its frightening so whithout been able to ask and get reference pictures of every bolt and paint finish for your exact car based on manufacturing plant, month and week of manufacture and your cars build sheet details we are lost over here and end up doing the wrong finish based on a wrong picture or what you think might be right. I truly have learnt a lot. Its a very different mindset.
It would also be impossible to hand a project like this over to even the best of the best car builders and panel beaters in SA. Lets face it they just not going to have the passion or time to investigate the details.. such as how much overspray must go in the back wheel arches of a 67 Dearborn mustang and if they did the costs would be probative so its very much a labour of love. I have had to stop many times mid process realising what I thought I knew needed to be done was not the case and had to go back and ask more questions and do more research.
I do find it all very interesting but having said all that this will probably be my one and only concours build and future cars will be very custom. (well I think so anyway)!!!

Re: 67 Mustang GTA 390 Fastback Restoration project begins
Painted the car a couple weeks back 14 July have not had a chance to upload pics. Here we go guys.. The day has arrived and she is awesome. I am truly over the moon.
This is the rear floor pan of the car painted in slop grey. Transmission tunnel etc Underside of front engine compartment painted in DTM Selemix batch matched to Red oxide. Notice the grey circle, this is where the car was mounted on the assembly line and never got paint. There are numerous such mounting points on the car all detailed accordingly. Actually the rails were galvanised from the frame rail supplier so I still need to faux detail these areas to reflect a galvanised finish Outside area of the inner frame rail where it meets the firewall. Notice factory correct seam sealer and how the paint starts to transition from red oxide to slow grey on the trans tunnel and body colour on the frame rail. Nothing here is masked as it should be. Well thats how it looks right now, waiting for paint to cure for probably 1 -2 months maybe longer. Then we will polish. 3M have seen the project and have offered to get involved which I am stoked about.. Side rockers and pitch weld. The pics weld and bottom of the rockers still need to be painted matte black as per factory. Notice overspray of green going onto floor plan with a Dark Moss green mist. Transition of engine satin black to body colour. Notice how the paint join Black to green is halfway across the plate/panel which is inline wit the firewall. Normally if we are painting the entire plate panel would be black or green. Also notice how its not a sharp edge join. Door hinges were set with full glass and winders to add weight prior to paint. When removed doors rise by +-1/8". The reasoning is here the hinges an hinge bolts need to be set prior to paint so that there is no adjustment marks or cracks of paint on bolts etc. Also notice factory seam sealer on Door A panels. Firewall transition from black to Red oxide. Its quite weird because from the trans cross member back it then transitions to slop grey, It took me 3 attempts to get this detail right wit back and forth with forum at concours mustang, Painted and loaded for home ! A pillar to shock tower transition. I made a small error here as I did not realise that from Shock tower forward it needs t be engine bay black so I need to paint that section black with a slight red oxide shock tower peeping out when done. fresh out the booth In final primer on the way to paint.. basecoat going down PPG paint used here and I employed the services of their Technical Paint Rep to work his magic. awesome chap awesome result. I just love this photo.. killer ass Overspray of rear valance as it should be. rolling out the booth floor pan - notice how the trolly where the body is mounted is set away from the trolley we used a PVC pipe here to replicate the round dolly marks I mentioned to replicate the factory process, this will allow for a circle and a shadow to happen when painting the side rockers and overspray will naturally follow strongly on the outside and a light shadow on the inside once we remove the frame and PCV pipe inserts.

The interior of the car is Dark Charcoal metallic which is a semi flat black with a bit of pearl. The upholstery, dash etc is black as well, The door pads when they go on then needs to match the colour of the interior of the door panel. Mustangs came with the interior of the door metal having been stamped, embossed with a grain to match the vinyl of the door pads and seat. This is a common error you will see on most mustangs that the interior door metal is smooth and has been filled with primer. Also see how the transition from green to black is mid panel.. weird... you would think this transition would be hidden under the door rubber in the corner bend.
