There's a gold 351 Cobra Jet for around 490 which is steep but is a proper Q code car
Well priced if its a number matching car.

ZA Perana,

Thank you for the feedback. I have also had a quick look at the vehicle but no road test yet.

Thanks for the feedback. Will keep the servicing and breaks in mind. A proper service on a newly bought (old) car is always a good idea.

Your offer is around what I had in mind, I would want to knock down a couple more as the speakers in in the rear still does not look right to me. I might need to redo that.

Anyone have an opinion in the correctness of the rear speakers in this vehicle?

I didn't like the speakers either, totally incorrect and not period. Also I think the front suspension /shocks might need replacing as the front bounced quite a lot over bumps.

I didn't like the speakers and the wheels and a few small things but if you get it under 400 and spend 50 over the next few months/years you can have a nice car .... I don't think they worth more than that though ...

Hi all.

Had a reply on the 71 Mustang project car at Kobus and Sons.

Need help on the following:

1st point:
The vin number: 1F05M1737999
Now I read this as a
1=71 model
F= Dearborn, Michigan (assembler)
05= Fastback Mach 1
M= Optional (before May) 285hp 351ci 4V V8
If anyone can confirm if I read this correctly and any other info I can get from this that I don't know how would be appreciated.

2nd point
The engine is a 351 Cobra Jet - non starter.
It needs: Carburetor, Starter, Radiator, Intake Manifold for starters. Not sure exactly what else.
This also means that this engine does not belong to this body? As this is then a Q code engine,correct?

3rd Point
The car does have SA registration papers. What worries me is that the vin number on the registration paper is one digit short - 1F05M173799 instead of 1F05M1737999. The last nine is not on the reg papers. Can this be fixed or is there a reason that I don't know of why the last number is missing?

Also date of first reg is showing as 1972-01-01. Is this ok even if it is a 71. I know vehicles can be manufactured in one year but only register later?

Has anyone been at Kobus & Sons lately and maybe seen this vehicle. I will most probably be flying up to joburg end of the month to go have a look.

Thanks for all the replies so far on this post. Much appreciated.

That engine is correct but that extra number I'd be a bit wary of could be an error I'd ask Willem to rectify it , I'll probably pass there on Saturday I'll have a look the car ...

The vin should only have 6 digits after the M .... And the M code Cobra jet was the predecessor to the Q code which came out late '71 ...

jlebenon, thank you so much for all your trouble and advice.

I have also found the following on the M-code both for the 71 model:
M - 351cid 4V V-8 280hp (CJ)
M - 351cid 4V V-8 285hp

So it seem that the M - 351cid 4V V-8 285hp could be correct for that car?

I have requested a picture from the door ID plate so that I can get specs on the colors and interior but am still waiting and hoping to get it.

The gearbox is in the vehicle (not fitted) and I hope to get some numbers of it and the engine as well but am still waiting.

I have dealt with Petro there for reference if you go round there.

My honest opinion leave the Jhb car alone unless you get it for under 100k ...
