A little drive with two old-timers - XR8 & Can-Am

Post by V8 fan » Sun 29 Jan 2017, 22:00

Went for a nice pub lunch at the Botriver Hotel in Botrivier - great place with nice views and ambience ;)

I reckon I should buy the XR8 back from my father now that I've sorted all those niggling problems including the 5th gear ratio cluster which was almost impossible to find - thanks to Gunter and for directing me to Alvin Chetty!! T5 box newly serviced with all seals and bearings, clutch assembly, starter, gaskets and almost all seals, wiring, cooling system and other odds and ends.

The "Animal" (old lady XR8) should give my father plenty of joy for years to come. For those who will be attending the George motorshow, keep an eye out for my fathers' XR8 on display....I'm certain there will be a few :D

Wow, very very nice....yes I will be in George this year...and no, that will probably be the only XR8 :) Good to hear you got what you needed for the T5, bit late but I incidentally have a XR8 T5 box complete in bits, they actually SA specific and have a unique build tag number for us. (Borg Warner South Africa - ID tag is 1352-066)

I will go looking for that Sierra soon in George!

Cheers

Great pictures, not something you see everyday, two SA legends parked next to each other.

Wait not for tomorrow to do what can be done today, live each day for one knows not what the next day may hold.

Thanks for the compliments - I'm certain my father will enjoy chatting with you.

Regarding the serial number of the BW T5 box - from what my research came up with when I had to source the correct 5th gear ratio is that the number comes up as 1352 - 115 which correlates with the ratio given by the manufacturer. I have no info on the 1352 - 066 box. I suppose it'll be the same.

However, we have anither T5 box fitted as previous owner decided not to replace the damaged 5th gear with the correct one thus making most ratios different to the original. We have a 1352 - 018 box with ratios: 4.03, 2.37, 1.49, 1, 0.86 (I now have the correct 0.73 gear set for 5th) and reverse: 3.76.

I still have another original XR8 box which I bought as spares to obtain the correct 5th gear set.

#115 is a WC box which should be on the fibre lined synchro rings? its release date (1985) is also post the XR8 intro date. Anyway, good you got it all sorted :)

Agreed!

Btw, my father ended up not going to the show in George due to unforeseen circumstances......

I also had to go back to work in Dubai beforehand - would also have been nice if I could have come with my car.

Aw well, there's always next time :D
