Pain staking work, and very time consuming. But you will know every corner and section of that car intimately when complete.
Looks like you're having fun!

Thks man.. trying to do it the best we can, as I keep saying I got some good guys helping me out doing the work, the fabrication side of things is not part of my skill set..moparmad wrote:I admire your attention to detail, very well done. Would love to see that work up close.
If in Durban you are welcome to pop in for a visit.

Len, yeah it is but we are going forward nicely now. Fabrication work all done a few small things here and there but we are done.Burnthosetyres wrote:Pain staking work, and very time consuming. But you will know every corner and section of that car intimately when complete.

Yeah having a job, building a car is sometimes more fun and rewarding than driving the finished product.. sometimes..

Right so we did the cart, and raised the car onto it, that was probably the hardest part, its going to be fun getting a fully painted car off this cart without scratching when it comes back from the booth later on down the road.. Will need a bunch of hands I think to lift it off carefully !
Mounted the cart to the body as per the original mounting points so I will get the same overspray and paint effects they would have got in the factory with mounting points not getting any of the slop grey / dark grey epoxy paint.
I can now move the car around in and out my garage because the blocking will be a messy process and I will need to do this outside under the carport.
Anyway we will now start putting on all the panels starting from back and work our way forward, making sure alignment, gaps etc are all 100% and then will start blocking the car down thereafter.
I just quickly put the front fenders on to get them out the way but I am liking what I am seeing.

Been a bit quiet of late, done a bit of paint underneath.
lets call it my quest for overspray...
The floor pan from the back forward has been painted in Slop grey as per the Dearborn Assembly plant. Then from the firewall forward the front frame rails and engine bay is painted Red Oxide and then thereafter flat black with the painter leaning over and painting downwards and into the firewall tunnel. Because its painted from the top the underside of the front will still have red oxide visible once all is done.
I am still needing to paint the engine bay black but I needed to get the red oxide overspray into the firewall and onto the transmission mount bracket and over the slop grey. Later on when the black is applied some of the overspray black will go into the transmission tunnel and mist over the red I have just sprayed. This is how it looks so far.
Next we are going to the rear and working forward fitting the boot, quarter panel extensions checking aligment etc. Then onto the rear quarter panels getting them perfectly straight.

Howzit
Time for a update, as I mentioned last we starting at the back and working forward. So fitted the boot/trunk hinges and the boot lid and latch. Then the boot rubber as it makes a difference with the lining up of gaps and levels of panels. Fitted the new quarter panel extensions only to find out they dont line up with the boot lid edge... It seems the fastback and coupe quarter panel extensions are different So I put them up for sale and sold them. Found my original LHS quarter panel extension but needed some repair so my guy did some old school lead repair work and its looked good to go. The RHS one was not repairable so I ordered a new one from USA and will get in a couple weeks.
Anyway the boot lid edges required some persuading to line up with the body so we did these adjustments and its looking good.
Next was some slight filler work on the quarter panels as we had previously metal pin and filed the quarters. I bought myself a set of Durablocks from USA. If you pay close attention to Chip Foose shows and Gas Monkey you will see they use them all the time, together with that bright yellow green filler called Rage Gold. Its a premium filler which sands really easily and is a quality product.
We sanded downand finished off with 180 Grit and then 2 coats more of epoxy so we are looking good even if I say so myself..
Next will be the MS primer on these and then blocking with 320 grit and then 400. Need to do some research on paint to use here as I am wanting to use a tinted MS primer so that if ever I get a stone chip through the green paint you dont have those terrible white spots showing through. Not that this car will ever see gravel roads but you never know !

You need to find your local Evercoat supplier or try calling the agents. I am here in Durban and we only have 1 paintshop stocking it. Not a big seller because of price..R600 for 4L.

Ok so we been on Dec holidays and back to work, but from mid Jan we have been back on the Mustang. The work we into now is very fiddly and time consuming and not much progress that is visual to see but its coming along slowly.
We have re-skinned the drivers door LHS and fitted it. If you recall last year we removed the outer skin and I had it sand blasted. We have now fitted the new skin and the entire door has been epoxy primed inside and out so its looks really good. You may ask why did I just not buy a new reproduction door and the reason for that the repos dont have the correct textured pressed grain on the inside panel that matches the door pad. So in the interest of keeping it original looking I am re-skinning.
This is the textured grain effect I am referring to : So this how its looking so far :
We have been working on the door gaps and front fender gaps.
We also fitted the hood/ bonnet. but I see I am missing 1 bonnet hinge spring so the bonnet is not sitting right, need to get a spring in there and then do the bonnet tweaks and adjustment. Also we had to do quite a bit of work to get the headlight buckets fitting right. But both sides done now and looking good..
Need to find a RHS original donor door now... anyone????
