Cosworth Sierra / Sapphire RS

Post by Gavin RS » Tue 24 Nov 2015, 09:43

Morning All

For anyone interested in a Sierra RS Cosworth. The very first car built by Geoff Mortimer was this car, it was his own car for many years. It was basically like a development car for the 12 local cars that were built in conjunction with Basil Green Ford (so technically there were 13 cars)

Gavin from Hamptons phoned me this morning to say the car is at his Hamptons showroom in Bryanston. the car has been standing in Wayne Plitts warehouse for a while (he owns the car currently) needs a good clean up and some work.

Apparantly they will let it go for under R120k, this car used to have a 2.4 stroker YB that Geoff originally built.

For details please phone Gavin Green at Hamptons .http://www.hamptons.co.za/pages/featured_cars/ (011) 463 2160

I sold my Sierra / Sapphire RS Cosworth last year for R160k, if it were not for my Race car build I would buy this car.

1986 Rover 3500 Vitesse (UK Import Ex London Police Car)

Out of curiosity, is this Sierra a 5 door hatch, like the XR8, or a 3 door like the Euro RS500, and early style bumpers or later iRS style?

It's a Sapphire body 4 doors

It's still got a Cosworth 2.0 16v motor in it but not running. From the pictures I was sent there is no cambelt . So engine damage ?? is unknown. This can quickly run up to R50k for a basic engine rebuild. That is if nothing is FUBAR ...

Yip 4 door sedan.

In stock condition this car would kill an XR8 in every which way.

Just a bit of info on Cosworth Sierras as most people don't know what they are, When I had mine I was always asked if it had a V8 or a V6??? All Sierra, Sapphire & Escort Cosworths had the Y Series 2.0lt 16v Turbo motor. (YBB, YBG, YBD, YBD)

first came the
Sierra RS Cosworth 3 door ,
Then
Sierra RS Cosworth 3 Door RS500 (Homologation car, 500 made, Assembled by Tickford ) Dominated Touring cars in the late 80's.This cars motor was the Ford Motorsport 200 Block which could handle higher boost and power, 580-600HP in Group A spec

Then the Sapphire 4 door sedan was introduced in 1988, first in rear wheel drive and then later in 4 wheel drive spec.

Then came the Ford Escort RS Cosworth, Chassis was a slightly shortened Sapphire 4wd chassis with hand built body by Karman, on;y rood skin, doors and hatch door were from MK6 Escort. this car went on to become a WRC world champion. Early versions had the big turbo Weber/Marelli injection and later cars had the smaller turbo with Ford spec injection for emissions etc and a different cam cover

All the Sierra / Sapphires were badged as Sierra RS Cosworths and with the Escort are the only production Fords ever to carry the Cosworth badge. And the UK dropped the Sapphire name for the Cosworths.

Differences were better suspension, bigger brakes with ABS, LS diff, T5 gearbox, and the fuel injection system was all Weber/Marelli

The car for sale is the first Cosworth built Locally by Geoff Mortimer who owned those car for many years, It was the car he developed to build the other 12 with Basil Green Ford. As Dion says it does need work and now that I have seen the cambelt missing the engine probably needs attention as does the interior. It was based on the Sapphire GHIA like my car was so has ABS brakes etc.

Hi Gavin. Would they also have fitted the cosworth suspension ,brakes and limited slip. I have a friend here in cape town who imported an original cosworth sapphire and he reckons there are many other differences besides the engine.

Errr.....not to get into a p-ing contest about this, Gavin, but with both cars in stock form there will be no killing either way. In modified form, well how long is that piece of string again??

Just saying.

Haha.I didnt want to get into that contest either because they are both good cars but it would be interesting to compare performance figures. I think early cossies made similar power to the xr8.
