Rambler
Rambler
Need some help. I had a look at a 60something AMC Rambler for another possible project. I don't know anything about these so any help will be appreciated. There is no gearbox so I wonder how scares are parts? This seems like chev motor but think there will be some differences if any one can clarify please? I think its a 3.8L so that makes me think GM built maybe same as the chevy 6cylinder....
Here are some pics, let me know what you think if its worth the time?

Re: Rambler
Thanks, so this is a AMC built motor? do you know perhaps what gearbox it used or can fit? I don't want another project that stands around waiting for parts due to scares and rare parts used. Googled it a bit and seems like its a 68 model.

Re: Rambler
The 232 is an AMC engine, was also used in Jeeps.

The 232 in the Rambler was connected to a Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic(also used in various Jeeps). The engine bellhousing pattern changed in 1972, when AMC started using Chrysler transmissions.

You might be able to fit a GM TH350 or TH400 with an adaptor plate, as there were some AMC's that made use of that transmission.

Not that an AMC is a Mopar, but I always thought the cool swap to do in a Rambler, was to fit a Chrysler 5.2L/318ci V8 and 4-speed auto out of a later model Jeep Grand Cherokee, sort of keeping it in the family.

Re: Rambler
Thanks for that Indiana, this is looking more and more like a possibility. Love the mopar idea! I wonder if a BB will fit
Re: Rambler
Having owned a 1967 Rambler American (Rogue) with that same 232 and Borg Warner auto tranny; I found out it was cheaper to swap in a ca. 1972 232 with its matching TorqueCommand 904 which was sourced from Chrysler rather than having the original BW box rebuilt. The problem is the bellhousing bolt pattern and flex plate/crank snout are different between the two motors.moparmad wrote:Thanks, so this is a AMC built motor? do you know perhaps what gearbox it used or can fit? Being in RSA; maybe a 4.0L Six out of a 1990's+ Jeep with its matching tranny and electronics/fuel injection would be a feasible swap?

Re: Rambler
Seems the best way will be to scrap the drive train entirely and go with a chev 4.1 and tranny or see what v8 will go in and match the tranny to that. I have no idea in what shape the 6 is in so it might be best to get replacement everything.

Re: Rambler
That I can understand because unlike here in the USA; 232-258 Sixes apparently are quite rare. The Chevy Six might be a good idea because the 1970's RSA Hornets did run the 250 so; fitting one to a 1969 down American/Rogue should be almost 100% plug n play.moparmad wrote:Seems the best way will be to scrap the drive train entirely and go with a chev 4.1 and tranny or see what v8 will go in and match the tranny to that.
