I wonder what the duty is in Swaziland or Lesotho ? Are there still those companies importing from Japan into Swaziland etc ? If I recall they where duty free. Not sure if it has been changed, but you raise a good point, why not import from USA into Swaziland and then into SA?Moering Tool wrote:
If you import from a SADC country, there is no import duty, only customs VAT and clearing agent fees, so there is a loophole that might exist if you know someone in a SADC country you can trust (and provided of course that THAT country itself lists automobiles as duty free. It would also only make sense if the double clearance and shipping fees is less than the basic duty if you imported it directly. It's probably not worth the hassle).

Forget trying to register a car here that has been imported thru a SADEC country.
These forums are full of guys trying to deal unsuccessfully with ex Lesotho/Botswana etc vehicles.
And of course what has not been factored in in the cost of the required right hand drive conversion. Of course we will all hear about my mate's friend's cousin who did it himself in his back yard for next to nothing -not true - it is a whole world of pain with steering geometry, bump steer, reversed dashboards, controls firewalls, wiring etc etc.

Re: Car Import costs - are our local cars for sale overprice
hi guys.on a topic like this you have to reason with guys that have done it and done it more than once.cause there are endless issues on a day to day change basis.i respect buckaroo comments cause he is more involved than i am.the licencing is the biggest issue right now.u need an loa and an import permit from itac before the car leaves the states.case closed.if u cant get that forget importing it.its diificult to put a price like a 10000us dollar car will cost 300000 rands.u cant really do that.u cannot determine what happens when it arrives and u got customs stop, inspections etc.that can run into 20-30k in a few days
just ask buckaroo?

Thanks Tim for endorsing what I say and as most know Tim also has been there done it etc.
I am a retired attorney and spend a fair amount of my time battling with various Gov Depts who change their positions on things almost day by day. This includes but is not limited to NRCS, Customs and Road Traffic (eNatis).
They all seem bent on making every process as difficult or impossible as they can.
A perfect for me quote:
“Any encounter with state bureaucracy, be it at local, provincial or national level, is characterised by mind-numbing time-wasting as poor systems combine to toxic effect with public employees who often seem to invent regulations on the fly. These niggles cumulatively cost the economy billions in lost production and opportunity cost.”
“While other governments strive to minimise or streamline processes, ours seeks to complicate them. The result of all this incompetence, inefficiency and sloth is that we are left wading through bureaucratic treacle. Energy is wasted, productive momentum is lost and competitive advantage thrown away.”

you also need tax clearance certificate and you have to apply for an importers code.you cant get one without the other
loa can take up to 3 months to get and you will pay storage in the states in the meantime.
u can add as we go along
thats how it goes

Yet there are a lot of people importing these cars Tim as you know so it is been done and can be done and I can only think these guys are doing it because its cheaper and/or better quality product than whats avail on the local market scene.TIMOTHY MUDALI wrote:you also need tax clearance certificate and you have to apply for an importers code.you cant get one without the other

It looks to me that the key is to buy a higher priced car as the fixed costs (freight/land/clearing) have less of a impact on higher valued cars.
Re: Car Import costs - are our local cars for sale overprice
Intresting topic and some good points made...i would think lets save the classics that are in SA and spent all that importing cost on them restoring...

Re: Car Import costs - are our local cars for sale overprice
importing is far cheaper than what is available on the local market unless you get a project car and restore to concourse like what buckaroo and some other guys are doing.
when i say importing i mean comparing a car in the usa with the same available locally with almost similar specs etc....
