What should I build ?

Post by Waterhond » Thu 05 Nov 2015, 20:04

How much difference in cost would there be between re-building a 350 Chevy small block, 351 Ford Windsor and 351 Cleveland engine ?

And in the case of stroking those engines. For instance to 408 ci ?

Let me chime in here. In the USA or Canada; doing up a SB Chevy is the cheapest route, in RSA since Ford V8's seem to be quite common, that may be the best way to go in that country.

Start with.... for what car.... for what purpose and why is your budget? With Rand / Dollar it's not cheap at the moment.

They're all great choices , those Ford strokers are big power makers ... A cleveland stroker sounds like fun but would be the most expensive I'd say ...

Hi,

Thanks for the opinions.

However, my question has nothing to do with what goes where. I am not planning to put anything into anything.

I would like to build an engine for the fun of it and, since I am a Chevy fan I'm constantly looking for Chevy parts.

But, last night I started thinking.

Since I already have a Cleveland block and crank, shouldn't I just build that, instead of having to buy a Chevy engine, and/or parts, which I don't have..

But I also know that a Cleveland is expensive to build, which made me also just wonder about a Windsor.

I browsed a little on Summit, and noticed that a 408 ci stroker kit for a Cleveland could actually be cheaper than one for a Chevy sbc. But most other parts are more expensive, like cams and stuff..

So, the reason I am asking this question on the forum, is to get an idea of what you guys have experienced.

Pieter.

Does not state the exact price difference, but might be of interest...

Stroke the cleveland using Chevy parts, best of both. :o
Ford pistons, Chevy rods and machined crank, will get you a 377 with Std bore or 383 with oversize.

Thanks ! I'll certainly look into it.

Would that be a 6 inch Chevy rod, as the Cleveland's is already longer than 5.7 ?

This is the old recipe.

377 (3.7" stroke, 0.030" over):
3.7" offset ground Cleveland crank with 6" rod (Olds or 2.1" journal Chevy)
Offset grind 351C crank to SBC journal, widen crank journal or narrow rods
Assuming you can find a good crank grinder
