It doesn't. The 4spd is/was an awesome gearbox and ratios was perfect. The Sierra 5spd on the other hand was only just that, a 5spd. Rubbish imo.
My advice do 21R conversion.

You can also do a Borg Warner T5 conversion(which was also used in other Fords), but I believe the 21R is still stronger.

Question, here in the States we never got the Essex V6's. We did get the 2.6-2.8-2.9-4.0 Cologne V6. Those were usually backed by SROD 4spd, Toyo Kogyo TK4/TK5 4spd/5spd or a Mazda M5OD-R1 5spd. Was the Sierra 5spd the Ford Europe T9?

I think the South African sierra box was a modded 4 speed. Its not good for big engines but works well for escorts. There is a different bearing and spacer you can use to make the 5 speed stronger for the v6 engine.
Magic happens.

Yes, the 5 speed used in conjunction with the 3L Essex V6 in SA, was the Type 9 transmission, although I think, it was sourced from Brazil.

Agreed, I was a parts salesman at Ford in the 90s. One of the first part numbers I learned was that of Sierra V6 box. Really crap box.

The Cortina's box is 10 times better.

What box was used in the Cortina? Borg-Warner SR-4? T4?
