Old Ford Transit Mk1
Hi all,
Long time since I posted anything. Been kind of busy with other stuff. I bought a transit van, I was looking for one of these for more than a year. All that was advertised, either had no papers or the license were so far behind that it would have cost me an arm and a leg to sort, then I do not even want to mention the actual state of the transits advertised. Found this one just a couple of blocks away from where I live. The paperwork are all in order and license is up to date. Got lots of work inside and out as well as some rust that needs to be removed. Currently its running a 2.5 V6 with what looks like a 4 speed manual box. I want to upgrade the suspension, fit disk brakes in the front at least and maybe fit a V8 at a later stage depending on how it runs with the V6 that's currently in there.
Here is some pics.
Hopefully the van will keep me out of trouble for the next couple of months
Cheers

Re: Old Ford Transit Mk1
I recall that the first models that arrived at Ford SA for evaluation all came out with either the V4 and the 2.5 V6. This was when my life in the Industry started in the drawing office! So I guess yours might still have the original motor! Enjoy!!

Re: Old Ford Transit Mk1
Thanks,
Johann, the car is not at my place yet. I was under the impression they only came out in a 2.0l V4 petrol and a diesel. The diesel had an extended nose. Just did a quick inspection before I bought it but it seems as if the firewall has been cut and a fiber glass cover made to make space for the 2.5 Also the clearance between the fan and Radiator is very small. Another thing I noticed (in Pics I saw on the net) was that the gear lever was originally a long floor shift (almost like the VW Kombi's) where mine comes out between the 60/40 split front seat (short Stubby little one), thus making me believe the motor and gearbox were fitted later. As far as I can see the initial mod was done nicely.
I will be able to tell you more once its parked in my driveway.
The already fabricated fiber glass firewall cover will make a V8 mod so much easier for me. My welding and plate metal work is not exactly up to scratch.
Here is a pic of the extended nose found on the diesel model courtesy of http://www.fordtransit.org
Cheers

Re: Old Ford Transit Mk1
I don't think we ever built a Diesel Transit in South Africa. What I do know is that the First Transit's, Zephyr's and the Taunis' used the German engines at first. Very long time ago!

Johann
Are you sure that the Transit was equiped with the 2.5 V6 in the RSA?

That's a very nice different project to embark on. Van looks to be in quite good condition for its age. Please post updates as you go along.

Re: Old Ford Transit Mk1
Johan, I only saw the prototypes that were shipped to us for evaluation. I never saw them in production! By that time I was busy with "Operation Mayflower" (Ranger) at GM!!! GM made me an offer I could not refusejohan wepener wrote:Johann

Re: Old Ford Transit Mk1
Johann, you are correct we never had a diesel Transit in SA. As far as I can tell there were only three models in SA, the pick-up, panel van and the custom/crew bus - the panel van had a 1700 V4 and the pick-up and custom/crew bus could be had with both the 1700 or 2000 V4.
Sure ZA I will post pics as we go along. I know you guys love pics.

Re: Old Ford Transit Mk1
You are right on the models. All had the Taunus engines at first. The 17M and 20M engines!!! The 2.5 engine was in the Zephyr/Zodiac bodies.Billy_the_Kid wrote:Johann, you are correct we never had a diesel Transit in SA. The bus was highly in demand for conversion! Pity Moby's sight is no longer available.
