Ford Ranchero Gli turbo
Ford Ranchero Gli turbo
Hi so after owning the Ranchero for a close to a year I finally had everything to do a turbo conversion.
Let me just say that I fell in love with this truck thats actually more like a car.
It handles like a car , drives like one and you can still load a huge amount on the back.
S0 I bought a turbo, GT35 with billet compressor wheel.
Bigger injectors as recommended 440cc
Blow of valve
Secondhand Tial 38mm wastegate
And ordered a custom chip from TI performance in Aus.
So I eventually decided on going with a J pipe to connect the turbo as the log manifolds that people normally uses
just dont feel good.
They flow poorly, warp and always break next the the welds for some reason.
Fitted everything up and a piece of exhaust, as I just didnt feel like building the exhaust.
Whilest waiting for the chip to arrive I started it up and me being me just had to drive it(not tuned)
So I installed a Malpassi rising rate fuel pressure regulator. Fooled the map sensor.
lengthened the 3'' exhaust just a bit and took it out.
Holy crap!!
This thing is fast, boosting it to only 0.4 bar and trust me its quick.
You can ask the blue M3 that tried to push me up the hill
Then the Chip and injectors arrivedfrom Aus,
Installed and started 100%
Took it around the block and the boost kept spiking to a bar, and I couldnt keep up changing gears!!
NOW This Car Gone Crazy
So now I figured out that my wastegate was too small
Bought a 50mm wastegate and now I could at least control the boost a bit.
And also finished the exhaust ,full 3'' to the back with one sausage box and an Aero muffler that I
imported years ago for one of my other projects
But now the clutch started showing its age, drives fine but when the boost come in it just spins the revs to redline
luckily its a biggish turbo , so I can still drive it up to 3500 rpm without coming in to the turbo
Next was to get a stronger clutch made up, so I send a spare one of to formula Friction.
Got it back, installed, but it very aggresive,
I really dont like the shuddering on take of , as this is still a daily drive.
But it grips like nobodys bussiness.

Awesome! Have for a long time thought one of these Ranchero's with a turbo setup, would be a great shop truck.
Are you still running the T5 gearbox?
Some pics of your turbo setup and exhaust manifold would be much appreciated, if you wanted to share.

Awsome truck that, The XR6 version is scarce but they are all good trucks for sure.
Some pics please
Ben Morganrood had a Falcon XR6 sedan with a turbo years ago, man that thing was fast.
In SA these 4.0lt motors are not really know that well by most and the single cam motor in your Ranchero can handle big horse power without any internal mods. I bet you lay down rubber everywhere if you keep your boost to around 0.8 bar max you will have a serious daily driver workhorse
I have been chatting to the guys in OZ about my Territory ST. it has the twin cam 24 valve turbo version of your motor. 245kw std BUT a software update and a mod on the exhaust takes it to well over 300kw even with stock intercooler
there is a guy in OZ running one that does a 10.2 sec quarter mile and is his wifes daily driver. 800HP on the motor.
Another vid I have seen is a guy in OZ with a MK4 Cortina using the same motor as you have also with turbo and is a full street car. he is running high 9 seconds in the quarter mile with auto box.
Apparantly the 4.0lt straight 6 Barra motor is on the same level as the Toyota 2JZ motor for power output and reliability according to the guys down under

Re: Ford Ranchero Gli turbo
I would love to get my hands on a Barra motor but $$$$$$
There is one at Springbok scrap yard @ R35k
Aim is to run it at 0.8 to 1 bar untill the new motor is built.
Yes Im still using the T5, bit worried about it it , but ai if it breaks then I will go back to a Toploader.
Sofar only manage to blow up my built intake plenum and the clutch atleast.
Also need to look at the open diff as she runs sideways @ 120km/h if the boost comes in
Here is some more pictures

Very nice indeed! that gives loads of inspiration to finish my Outback off!
Must agree the Territory ST is a super underrated SUV,had mine for a few weeks now,and loving it,but then again so are the filling stations...

This all sounds great.
Would you mind either in this thread or in a private message to me, showing your costs for each item?
What is a J-Pipe? pictures?
Do you have any idea on how much power you are making?

Re: Ford Ranchero Gli turbo
Hi.
The J pipe or UP pipe as its also known just routes the exhaust manifold upwards so the turbo goes on top of that.
I feel it flows much better than most fabricated steam pipe setups, although the gasses might cool down a bit.
Not sur on how much power its making , but alot more than it used to even when I had a 100hp NOS on it
