Re: My 1972 Toyota Corona MKII & 1974 Opel Manta
I find myself not being very active on this great forum as I feed my Classic Car addiction very much on Facebook, in my signature are my two pages on my two beloved classics. I have shared most of the information of them on these pages. Including all the photo's of the restoration process of my Corona.
It is great to see a lot of you guys on the AMC facebook group I find sharing info on there easier then over here, although it is more convenient to share a little longer story over here.
Unfortunately I have not much updates on my two cars, I work overseas a lot and time is not always with me as i am sure most of you know that feeling.
I am currently overseas and hope to return back home the first week of June and hopefully I can spent some much needed time on my Manta project, as the list of things to do is only getting longer and nothing has been ticked off yet.
My plan is to visit Arnold (also a member here) in Bloemfontein to see if I can help make his Manta parts pile a little smaller as I have a couple of parts still missing.
Then it is the Manta on the blocks and get her ready for roadworthy so I can get her finally on my name.
Biggest issue at the moment are the brakes as I have a leaking master cylinder and a wrongly jetted carb. If the bakes and carb are sorted I should be able to get her through the test and then the real work can begin.
One of the missing parts was a trim ring for my wheels and found a set at the piston ring meeting last month (ford day) which look great on her, although I would rather have a set of rostyles...(so if anybody is selling or knows where I can get a set PCD 100x4 please let me know)
While at the Piston ring meeting i also found a service manual for my Corona
The Corona is pretty much finished except the bumbers need a new chrome job and a little bit of precision panel beating
Anyway as I said, I have a long list of things I want to do on my Manta (if funds allow I am even considering a full nut/bolt restoration) and will post here when I am making those steps.
It is always great to share this with people who have the same passion, as the conversation about my cars with Family is usually short lived

Re: My 1972 Toyota Corona MKII & 1974 Opel Manta
So this week I have had the Manta on blocks and she received a lot off TLC.
Every since i bought my Manta a few months ago she has been patiently waiting to have her issues sorted.
-Leak on Master Brake cylinder, turned out the liner was damaged and I went in search of a new Master Cylinder and found one that fitted (apparently from a Honda) --Leaking Brake Master Sorted!
-Transmission fluid leak from Speedo cable, and propshaft seal... removed the speedo cable turned out the seals we inserted the wrong way arround...Original propshaft seal was due for replacement....found the excact replacemend---Transmission Fluid leaks Sorted!!
-Engine oil leak at sump plug--Turned out the thread of the plug was stripped...replaced sump plug and did an oil change and new Filter---Engine Oil Leak Sorted!!
-Petrol pump Leak--After searching a few spare places found a replacement Petrol Pump (apperantly Opel Monza has the same one) ---Leaking Petrol pump Sorted!!
-Stuck cabin Ventilator and stuck heat valve--After stripping the whole unit and what i found it was no surprise both were stuck and not working, 42 years of euh...crap..after cleaning and lubricating both the Fan and the Heat valve worked again (okay this is the short version but they work ) -- Cabin Ventilator and heatvalve problem sorted !!
-Rear window catch missing window nut---After visiting a couple of scapyards i found a nut that could work with my catch, a small modification and i can now nicely close my back window and it still looks original--- Back window issue sorted !!
-Play on steering column---There was a lot of play on the steering column when removing the column it turned out the column bushing was totally worn out---euh where do i find one, i didn't so i got one made a friend made one on the lathe --- Play on steering column sorted!!
-Electrical Problems--- Don't want to go in to much details but after a lot of swearing replacing wires...All my electrical Equipment is working as it should! --- Electrical Problems Sorted!!
-Wrong Jets in Carburetor--- Got the correct jest for my 36DCD Carb...and the engine purrs like a kitten ---Carburetor problem Sorted !!
Did a few more odds and end but writing this down like this it sound like it was all done in one day but it took a good 5 days of work!
Still some more to do but my Manta is nearing to a stage were she almost perfect

Thanks Johann...I just love my two classics and it is also really great to see progress made of getting the classic back to its former glory.Johann72 wrote:Hullo!

Took The Corona out for a drive today and since the Manta had so much TLC this week the Corona received a good clean and polish

Re: My 1972 Toyota Corona MKII & 1974 Opel Manta
So a little update on my Manta's progress: (sorry for not being so active on the forum but i know you all know how time is our common enemy )
-Dashboard re-upholstered
Since the South African sun had left his marks on the dashboard in the form of cracks I had it re-upholstered -Steering wheel center re-upholstered
Same problem with the center of the steering wheel and likewise re-upholstered -Test center and Registration
With new dash in place i finally was able to go to the test center to get her roadworthy certificate and finally get the Manta on my name. Tested all the lights the previous day and of course not every worked while i was at the testing centre but the guy who did the roadworthy understood the progress of restoration and issues the certificate....so on my way to the municipal license center, well after 3 hours of patiently waiting i got my manta registered on my name -repaired rear license plate lights
One of the issues noted at the roadworthy were the license disk light...well they work now -repaired boot light and dash cabinet light
While I was repairing lights that day I also repaired the boot light and the dash cabinet light... -Traced Rostyle wheels and restoring
My favorite part of this tread i am writing here.. I was able to trace the correct Rostyle wheels...They came of a Chevrolet Chevair, overseas very similar to the Opel manta B, which was not released in South Africa.
Anyway had the widened with 30mm, sandblasted and then started playing with a Spray gun and masking tape and see here the result...still looking for the correct centercaps and have to decide what tire to use...any suggestions? thinking of using 185 but could go as wide as 205?
-Gearbox and Diff
Gearboxes and differentials are a specialist trade and didn't want to go there myself so brought in my Manta to RDG (rex diff gearbox) in boksburg...unfortunate at the moment of writing this tread my manta is still at there shop...but i basically what them to go over the gearbox and diff replace all the seals and look at the small issue with the gearlink
-Visit Bloemfontein getting spare parts (fellow forum member Arnold)
Away from the forum i have been in regular contact with fellow forum member Arnold, we talked many times about meeting each other but this weekend (Dec 5th) we finaly made it happen...I must say i have never talked so much Manta in one day with anyone! Very much enjoyed the day Arnold thanks!
And while I was there I also got some missing parts from his treasure of parts he collected from his to two parts manta's

I went 185 x 15 with my Rekord. Narrow enough to handle the steering and wide enough for a good stance!!
