1980 FORD F100

Post by RiaanB » Mon 11 Aug 2014, 20:33

Hi guys.

Here is the start of my project. A 1980 F100 with a 351 Cleveland transplant from a F250. Bought her on a farm and only really getting to terms with all that has to be done after a few weeks.

She is registered on my name and the license is paid up till next year. As my first target I just want to get her through roadworthy so I can get her license disk issued.

I identified a few crucial items on the to do list before roadworthy.
- Rear Brakes
- Manual gearbox is extremely noisy - upgrade to an auto box.
- New Tires and cleanup of steel wheels.
- Flush and repair of cooling system.
- Engine oil seals
- Major service.
- Steering system extremely heavy and noisy.
- Lower rear suspension to get level ride height.

I am sure there will be more but I have to start someplace.

Found all the new brake bits at Motown.
This was the first time in my life I actually attempted doing brakes myself.

After putting it all together and bleeding the system it sprung a leak at one wheel cylinder. :(

The old brake pipes was just to rotten:

Triangle brake and Clutch hooked me up with replacements:

Next was cooling system. The top hose was too near the fan blades and had some damage covered with a Bicycle puncture patch. :)
After properly flushing out a ton of rust, then running cooling system flush and then flushing properly again I replaced the muddy sludge with 50 / 50 distilled water and coolant. After trying to find new radiator hoses I made up a silicone top hose from bits and pieces.

Thanks to Rick for sourcing my C6 Box. It is now at Friendly motors for a recon. Should be back in a week or so.

1980 F100? Unless Ford RSA trailed up here in the USA by a year or two; your pickup should be a 1978-79. 1980 brought is a completely redesigned F Series.
