ZD fuel guage?
Hi guy's.
Wonder if anyone could give me some pointers. The fuel guage on my Fairlane has never worked since I've owned it.
So are there any common problems these cars are known for?
Or could anyone please advise the best way to check if it's the guage or sender at fault?
Electric's are by a long way my weak point so any advice would be fantastic.
Cheers all.Sean.

Re: ZD fuel guage?
There are several things that coult be wrong. Trace them methodically and you will work out what is wrong.
Fuel gauges are usually in a circuit like this:
(other owners may be able to confirm if Fairmont/Falcon/Fairlane are like this)
Battery + --- ign switch --- fuse --- voltage stabiliser --- gauge --- sender in tank --- chassis earth.
Your car starts and runs so battery to ign switch works
Does your water temperature gauage work? If so your fuse and stabiliser are OK. If not check those two.
If you are happy that the voltage stabiliser is working do this: Find the sender in the tank. Disconnect the wire. Ign on. Gauge shoul be all the way on Empty. Earth the wire to the chassis and the guage should now show Full. If no movement check wiring back to gauge, and between gauge and stabiliser (behind dash). If the gauge swings then the sender is broken or stuck. Remove from tank and investigate.
Remeber to disconnect battery before removing sender from tank! Keep it disconnected till it is back in and sealed again. You don't want any sparks!!
If your sender has more than one wire on it - the wiring is different from above. If so don't do the above until you have worked out what the wiring does.

Re: ZD fuel guage?
That's brilliant mate.Thanks.
Temp guage works fine and there is only one wire going to the sender so I will try that test in the morning and let you know how it goes.
Cheers Sean.

Re: ZD fuel guage?
You were spot on John.
Earthed out the sender wire and the guage went straight to full. Can't thank you enough for pointing me in the right direction.
I would have messed around for hours before I worked that out
So I guess that means a dodgy sender
I will have a ring round and see if anyone here can get hold of one, unlikley.
Any suggestions folks.Any suppliers over your way who would ship to the UK if I can't get one here?
Thanks again.Sean

Re: ZD fuel guage?
Glad to help.
There is a link to a complete wiring diagram on this thread:

Remember to disconnect the battery before you pull that sender out - we don't want you or your car disappearing in a ball of flame.

Yep.Will do
Re: ZD fuel guage?
quick Q;
i earthed the fuel sender to the body work and the gauge jumped to full.
does this mean sender is busted? if so, are there generics available or does somebody have a good secondhand one?
thanx!

Re: ZD fuel guage?
I have no idea about Ford senders, but on old Mini senders you could sometimes fix them. Carefully prise the thing open and look inside for broken connections. Resolder any breaks.
