58 Chevy Build
58 Chevy Build
Finally I have managed to get my pics re-sized and up loadable to AMC, big thanks to Ters for taking a moment of patience with me this morning.
Well nearly 2 years ago to the day I managed to convince my Boss that it's time to build a project and she agreed .
So with a vehicle in mind we set off one friday mid morning to Kimberly (actually Barkly West) after renting a suitable trailer to collect/buy what I hoped was a reasonably rust free 58 Apache.

This was the best one I have seen in about 4 months of viewing some real rotten shells.

Saterday evening we where back home in Durbanville and offloaded on sunday morning after spending 2 hours fixing flat tires and unseizing the stuck brakes, loading her onto the trailer was no problem as I just dragged her on with a chain hoist.

A week later the dismantling started.

As there was no motor or gearbox fitted(good news - less to tow and throw away ) the front clip was eventually removed in one piece after torching off the welded on fender bolts .

Re: 58 Chevy Build
The complete suspension was removed and sold, as my plan is to fit a XJ6 front suspension and a 9" LSD Ford rear, the Chevy axle was toast anyway and I did not want to use it driven by a 454 ci motor.

- After removing the front clip and bumper, I found that the chassis was bent slightly on the left side, so it got some surgery to straighten it.

Re: 58 Chevy Build
I removed all leaf spring attachment front and rear and also the front cross member as it will interfere with the motor mounting and position of the Jag front end, also all other brackets and unnecessary attachments are going to get removed and the chassis will get boxed for added strength and rigidity.

Test fitting motor to measure for clearance, mounted as low and far back as possible and then measure up for engine and gearbox mounts.

Time to rebuild the 9" rear with new everything, bearings, seals, LSD clutches & springs and a fresh set of gears with 3.5:1 ratio and an uprated pinion bearing carrier and a crush sleeve eliminator kit.

Re: 58 Chevy Build
Jag Steering rack rebuild, gold plated prices for repair a kit of which less than the parts half fits so, buy another different kit to get the required rest of the parts - school fees she's a bitch.
