70's Dodge D100 Restoration
Re: 70's Dodge D100 Restoration
I'll admit it: I'm shaking my head at how many USA (LHD) Dodge truck parts were used in yours............especially a 'LHD' steering column with the indicator switch and gear shifter location-------------which actually makes it easier for you to get parts from sources here in the USA.

You are quite right BH. Have just bought a whole turn signal switch with 10 year warranty for $17 or R200 in local language and a new ignition switch for $30.

Re: 70's Dodge D100 Restoration
bumping this topic to the top....
Have ordered some spares from the states spent a couple of local bucks on some spares I was able to locate. The plan is to have the dodge up and running in about two weeks time.
The neighbours are going to hate me. There is absolutely no exhaust to speak off... well maybe some rusted pipe that runs to nowhere around the drivers seat.

Re: 70's Dodge D100 Restoration
i've done the headers only thing once before, it sounded like a funny car
car alarms going off, neighborhood dogs go nuts, and me shamefully enjoying every second
any case, hope you get it running real soon.

Re: 70's Dodge D100 Restoration
The happenings of this past weekend.
Front wheel bearings replaced, took twice as long than anticipated after one of the arms on my bearing puller broke. But got them done and in place.
Mounted the disc rotors again, calipers and new disc pads and proceeded to try and bleed the system. Took twice as long again, as I failed to notice that the brake pipe end, which takes a banjo bolt needs a copper washer top and bottom, due to a small recess in the banjo bolt holder. (I need an icon for face palm)
Using some metal putty, temporarily fixed a crack in the exhaust manifold.
Proceeded to swing the motor, with little luck of firing getting her to start. Some carb cleaner sprayed direct into the throat and there was live, some more carb cleaner and started running with a constant miss. Cleaned spark plugs and noticed some oil fouling. She ran better, still with a constant miss, or just the big hole in the exhaust not quite sure now. Managed to drive her forward, after getting the back brakes unlocked. Drove 7m with big smile on my face. She stalled....
More carb cleaner, lots of accelerator pumping - small fire in carb.... Idling bloody fast, tryied to engage gear only to stall each time.
So it was eventful. So troubleshooting procedure is as follows, check all spark plugs are getting spark and move up to hotter plugs.
Check the carb out proporly as I have noticed that the fast idle cam is gone , The wrong ports have been hooked up to the distributor etc. etc.
That said I would appreciate a pic from someone of the a Holley 1945 setup on an existing slant 6, I want to make sure that I am not dealing with some South Africa idiosyncrasy. For example, I don't think we have a dashpot on ours, because of less than strict emission control regulations as in the US at the time.
Draglinks are and couple of ball joints look shot, so I will be getting new ones in.
Oh, I got it washed.

Re: 70's Dodge D100 Restoration
Some pics of the carb. So would really appreciate a view of other peoples setups.
This was a special aftermarket feature but she also comes with a built in water level.
So lots still to do. Just want to get her to be a runner, so troubleshooting the ignition will be the next port of call. Was able to source a fast idle cam in the US, so that should could be here for the next weekends instalment.
Then to the chariot of death itself, after her first bath. This was a special aftermarket feature but she also comes with a built in water level.

Re: 70's Dodge D100 Restoration
So update. Ignition and fuel system troubleshooting.
Replaced all spark plugs and she fired first time.
Installed fuel filter between fuel tank and fuel pump and another between the fuel pump and carb. Result petrol tank needs to be flushed as fuel filter blocked out in about 5 mins.
Rigged up a hillbilly remote fuel tank and this is where it got interesting. Got her started but she was revving high as carb linkage was sticking. Sprayed some Q20 and freed it up. Struggled to start her again as the fuel did not seem to get to the carb. A bit of fuel in the carb, she started and pump seemed to draw fuel again.
Switched it off, then was toast again. Fuel Pump with engine cranking did not seem to get fuel to the carb. Put some fuel in the carb got it started and then the fuel pump seemed to be able to supply enough fuel again.
Looks like a new fuel pump unless someone thinks I am barking up the wrong tree.

Re: 70's Dodge D100 Restoration
Glad you've joined the group . Definitely seems like the pump is the culprit....small tear in diaphragm, rocker arm worn?! George from US Connection is very helpful sourcing replacement parts for Mopars: http://www.usconnectionv8.com/ or these guys (untried...) in Boksburg: http://2valiantworlds.wix.com/valiant-world.
Some items off-the-shelf from US Connect....new dizzy cap and rotor for my 383 @ R150,00 .
