converting a gearbox mechanical speedometer to electronic
converting a gearbox mechanical speedometer to electronic
I have a 1972 Opel Rekord Sprint that has a 350 Chevy motor and toploader gearbox. My problem is that the car came to me without the speedometer and the rest of the clocks and I want to put some new ones in its place. That poses another problem as that all the nice looking ones with KM\H come only in electronic format. Is there a way for me to attach a device to the speedo output to send an electronic signal to these types of speedometer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am busy restoring the car and have just got it back from the body shop and I am rearing to get started on everything else.

Now thats a beautifull Opel .American muclecar shape.
The thing with the smaller Chevs( Firenza) and Opel (Mantas and kadets) are the roofs are too high and out of proportion, But not this one, beautifull.
Really Nice looking car.

The car looks great!!!
Will one of these work for your speedo?

Also some aftermarket cruise controls systems use a magnet on the propshaft and sensor that sent the speed signal up to the unit and could be perhaps retrofitted to work?.

Hey JC,
slightly off topic, but did your car come with a five stud fitment? I've got an Opel Manta 71 that I am about to start working on, and I want to have the five stud instead of the standard four stud fitment. If you changed the hubs could you let me know which bits you used?
Thanks
John

Hi John
Mine are 5 Stud. Considering I've put a V8 into the car I converted the rear suspention to Jaguar to accomadate the extra power which has a 5 120pcd I then had the front hubs redrilled to match the rear.
Regards

Re: converting a gearbox mechanical speedometer to electronic
To come back to your original question about the speedo. You'l need an aftermarket electronic speedo and a gearbox sensor from a late model car, modified to fit your gearbox. It is doable but not easy. Other wise contact some people that does gauge refurbishment like Taximeter services.
Are you sure your gearbox is a toploader?

Hi Hano
Yes it is a RUG AR1 Toploader gearbox (I think it is out of a Fairlane 351). Thanks for the infomation on that, but i have subsequently found a set of Smiths gauges from a Jaguar which are perfect for what i want.
