Hillman Super Minx Mk3
Hillman Super Minx Mk3
Second in my series of rather avg car is this machine....
1.7 liter motor derived from a Peugeot motor I beleive, the engine it seems is the best part of the package. 18mpg at full throttle seems rather ridiculous but maybe the motor wasnt very efficient..
Power figures were respectable at 76 bhp which wasnt bad for the time. You paid for this power though...the car cost R1900 a lot back in 1965.
Perhaps my biggest reason for not liking this car is its styling....ridiculous small tail fins on a british car is never a good idea and on this car they look plain odd, the front looks like an early Opel Kadett, the side being squashed and high like an early prefect...there was no imagination in the styling at all.

Are you sure they were they using Peugout engines as early as the mk3?
Peugout engines in Hillmans were yet another unique to SA build.

The Super Minx from 1965 had a Peugeot engine, as did the Hunter and Vogue from 1967 and the Arrow from 1968.
Amazingly I saw one the other day, the guy must have thought I was nuts, I was so excited to see one and wanted to stop him to ask if I could get photos, but he drove off, in rather a hurry.

Re: Hillman Super Minx Mk3
Interesting. Thanks Moby. I thought, wrongly, that the Peugeot engine only came along with the Arrrow/Hunter range.

I'm suprised. Like John I also thought Peugeot came into the picture much later.
The Dodge Avenger also had the Peugeot engine.

Re: Hillman Super Minx Mk3
I had a Dodge Avenger (in England a Hillman Avenger, which belonged to Vauxhall) with the Peugeot engine many years agao. This car went very well. The biggest failing with this car was the gearbox.

Re: Hillman Super Minx Mk3
We had a Hillman Minx here in Canada when I was a kid...a '61 I think?.
I remember when Dad sold it for $1.00...gave it away really but some figure had to be involved to transfer the paperwork or something like that?.
I'll have to look and see if there's any pics of it still around!.

Hi Moby
Unfortunately that's not my car. I can't find a picture of anything like that having been sold in SA. Mine was metalic gold with those rostile wheels. But use it anyway.
