No ways Wayne if it was that your car was not authentic it would'nt have been your fault never. If your plate is dated 12/70 just for your own sake I'd find out why as from what I understand which I am no authority on this, throws the build dates relative to number out of the rest of us. If my plate was dated 10/70 I'd go after the reason why there must be a reason be it a stamper with a hangover or an original car but with a lost plate that could have been replicated for the original car. There will be somebody this side that can help you sort that out. If there was yellow under your plate for example then as you say knowing it was Peri-Peri then the plate was removed at one stage so that does not make the fact a plate could have been lost imposible if you know what I mean. Unfortunately these days one has to detract from the real reason why we fiddle with these cars and become like a detective.

It was more a generalised sermon on that sort of thing and I can tell you that I had to check something with a company up north exporting cars this was a few years ago, shame on the chap who bought a specific car. Whether they knew or just did'nt know is debatable but I suppose that's all over the place.

I hear that in Aus this is a major issue with GT's as unlike here in ZA we did'nt get any middle models ordinary V8 Fairmont's. It was either Fairmont GT 2v or 4v or the inline six.

Here this Capri thing scares me especially due to the fact that the Perana was based on a car which is a standard fitted out 3 litre. Unlike the Can Am's which was more parts bin I'd suspect every Capri as a matter of peace of mind. Including my own which I got a big wake-up call when I started reading the sort of detail you gusy have mentioned. Because it's easy to apply that detail to a 3 litre XX capri with Perana doner parts.

Thanks for the reply to the last thread.

i would like to apoligise to all who may think i am just another hakker, but my intentions are above board.

Firstly, the car i have, was Peri peri Red, evedent by he paint under the 3 coats i have carfulyy taken off. it has also at some stage had a bad prang, and is full of bog.I have been an enthusiast, and probably a bit of a nerd, when it comes to getting things just right. i also understand about over restoration, and have seen cars such as shelby mustangs, have all the rough edges fixed up, as they should not be.

I have owed the following: 1970 GTXLR 3.0 Auto, 1971 GTxlr Manual, 1972 South african 1600GT(fooishly let it go), a 1972 Australian 3.0GT auto, of which only 163 were built, with a very rare, black vinal roof(a rare option Australia), and Currently have a 1971 Australian 3.0GT that has undergone a full restoration, to as exact factory spec as posible.I have grown up around restorations of Cars and motor cyles all my life, or as far as I can remember, as my farther was a real, self taught, fanatic about doing things right the first time.My in tentions were no more, than to get assistance for my next project, wich is going to take a hell of a lot oftime, and will not be a cheque book resto.Waht is the point,if you can not get your hands dirty doing it. thatis half the fun.

I believe you will find the answer to the paint colurs. if you do agoogle search for 1970 Ford Mustang/fairline PPG colour chips. If you would like a copy, please contact me off line.

Thank you all, and sorry if i up set a few members.

Wayne, let me tell you that generally locals I'd say are forthcoming and dignified people. But today I would have a stroke buying a Perana or the likes of such cars without somebody having a very good look. Even if it is to explain certain things that are not that serious but can cause some form of untrue doubt.

Did you car come from Perana Cars in Pretoria or Lekker Aussie rather the previous lot that ran it ? If it did they should have picked that up and been able to explain it as "experts" on these cars they were exporting.

may have been Perana cars, as it was imported by the previous owner about 2 years ago. It is now in my shed, in amilion bits.It had been convered very roughly to an auto, but shws all evedence of being what it should be.thre are, as i said, three top coats, and serveral layers of primer, and a ton of bog.Yes the tags were all on one side, but you would find it hard riveting them to bog, and not cracking the paint. Seriously, this car is full of bog in the front, and seems to have been raced, at least it has signs of it. The worst part, being the banna shaped front rails! Not a hard one to repair though.

John and I will be keeping in touch. On another note, can any one supply a steel timing gear set for an essex V6?

Tags should be one either side Wayne just check that Ford plate on the passenger side Perana on driver side. I would'nt worry about the condition as even if it was still looking good you can see for yourself now that you would have still taken it to pieces.

Sorry to say this but it just is one of those things here what may seem a stunning car is in fact plastered with paste and paint. Just a bit of sun exposure and you see the signs such jobs. A decent job today MUST be done by yourself, managed by you to the bolt. Or it ends up semi customised. That is where the other half of the joys of "owning" a classic climbing in yourself with minimal specialised stuff you can't do outsourced.

I contacted those guys once for a friend and my experience was to leave it besides the fact the car was definitely a suspect non-original.

Just a note: Perana Cars of back then was with a previous owner and management. We hear much better things about them these days under the new owner.
