V8 vs 4.1 i6
So, I've been looking for a ranchero or el camino, and find that there are many more el caminos for sale, though most tend to be straight 6's, which seems to make the, a fair bit cheaper.
I drove a 351 Ranchero today, and imwas frankly a little underwhelmed. Granted it was my first drive in a classic car, but I was expecting a little more. So, now the question arises, how does the 4.1 compare to a stock 70's 351 or 302 ford V8?
My original (naive) intention was to grab one of these babies and do burn outs up and down the street whenever the mood struck, but I've since grown to like the idea of just having a Sunday cruiser that I can enjoy regardless of power. Being able to up the power at some point in the future would be great, but the intention (budget) is not to do too much straight away...
So, help a noob out please, pros and cons of the motors?

If you are comparing to modern cars you may be disappointed - even middle of the range stuff will out perform just about everything from 40+ years ago. But they do it without much (if any) soul..
An eight is fun and all, but you'll go a long way to beat a healthy 4.1 for the purpose you're describing. And you can wake them up quite nicely too.....

What would the stock outputs of the various motors be?
Re: V8 vs 4.1 i6
No sound can beat the double pipes of a V8!!
Take a ride in Maverick's supercharged Lumina or a ride in a manual Fairmont GT with a hot cam and big 4-barrel. You may just need a pair of new pants after the ride!!
Then you must not forget the manual Capri Perana and Chevy Can Am as most is super fast with to little brakes. You may need other set of pants for them as well!!

Rassie, the 351 was the baby blue one in Pheonix. He said you were coming to look at it this week? I think I'm going to pass on it, but would love to hear your impression, if nothing else to help me understand what I should and shouldn't expect..

Re: V8 vs 4.1 i6
It is unbelievable how cars were engineered for the better over the past 40+ years.
Even 1.3's of today, even Ford 1 litre Ecoboost will give a Cortina 3.0S or XR6 a
hard time. But, as Garage says, without or minimal soul.
I always wonder what people would think back in the 70's if
a BMW 330 straight six with twin turbo was then available for test. Nobody would believe it.
Those destinct caracter of yesterdays cars are unfortunately no more.

El Camino 4.1L = 155hp
El Camino 308 = 240hp
72 Ranchero 4.1L = 1V 155hp / 2V 170hp
72 Ranchero 302 = 240hp
72 Ranchero 351 = 260hp

Oom Tienie ons sal dood met die V8 klank in ons ore!
petermoffat the guy who do put the ad was not born when the Ranchero was build. He said it belong to his grand father or something like that.
He send wattsupp pictures and I could see it was a 302C as the rocker covers was more red than the 351C in the Fairlane 500. That is why it was slow!! A 351C would have left long black tire marks even with a 2 barrel!
No Ranchero came with a 351 in S.A. He said it was original engine with a 2-barrel Holley.
He also call me Boss. This is when you run as that Ranchero looks nice with plenty body filler and fiber glass. They are good with hiding rust in Durban!!
Buy a Ranchero from inland. Elcamino parts is hard to find!!
