Visit to LA

Post by CanAm17 » Tue 11 Jul 2017, 13:53

Just back from NYC / LA. I tend to do quite a bit of driving on my LA visits and, as such, always rent "something special". This year I got my hands on the 2017 Camaro SS Fiftieth Anniversary Convertible. 6.2 liter, 8 speed auto. Picked it up at LAX at 1.00am after flying in from New York and was pleasantly surprised when the guy at the Hire Counter urged me to "use a bit of rubber on your way out". No second invitation needed and we laid down the first of many twin stripes as we left the lot. A tad too many buttons / aids / buttons / functions for my liking, but a hoot when you put your foot down.
Whilst in LA I stayed with a good friend, fellow petrolhead who has a beautifully renovated Airstream on a deck below his house which he rents out on Air BnB. A great break from staying in a normal hotel.
Now, here's the thing. My friend has offered me his 67 Impala at a great price. Beautiful, original, matching numbers in great nick and I am wrestling with the question of whether it would be possible to do a RHD conversion and bring this baby to SA. Any ideas / advice most welcomed. Pics attached show the rental Camaro, the Airstream and the Impala.

That Impala is stunning! I reckon a RHD conversion would be worth investigating, providing it could be done properly in SA...

As for the Camaro...I am sure the back tyres were more than a little worn when your returned it!

I’m sure it would be possible to do a RHD conversion, and there are probably a number of companies stateside that specialize in such conversions.
If you are looking at having it done locally, I’m sure you know the 1967 Impala was available locally in RHD, and you could use those components, but I believe all years 1965-1968 full size Chevrolets sedans made use of a mirror-image version of the LHD 1965 Impala dash, thus not similar to your 1967 LHD dash.

I know Barry from Stellenbosch has crafted a RHD version of a LHD dash for an earlier Impala.

And I think you should talk to member Graeme, he knows Impala’s and also tours stateside.

Take a look at the following threads, they might help you to a more informed decision. ... f=5&t=2029 ... rolet+dash ... =40&t=5457 ... rolet+1967 ... =5&t=16498 ... =5&t=19463
