66 Mustang 289 - Engine Number
Help needed from the Mustang guru's please. A friend has just brought in a 66 Stang GT convertible from the States. He had the RHD conversion done there and the car is a beaut. Has the LOA and now busy with local registration, however nobody can locate the engine number. Any ideas where it should sit on a 289 block?
Thanks
Thanks

Right side in front the block below the cylinder head behind the oil dipstick!
It is stamped on a flat machined piece on the front of the block.
Rassie.

Here's a few pic's from my '65 Convertible I'm busy restoring - it should be just in front of the starter housing on the passenger side(LHD)

Re: 66 Mustang 289 - Engine Number
I might be wrong, but that is the casting number of the block, V8 fan, not the "unique" engine serial number.
BTW, do you know you have a 1971 302 Fairlane/Torino block?

Re: 66 Mustang 289 - Engine Number
Ahhh, I see now that I misread the heading - engine number was needed and not casting number...thank you for correcting me.
Wrt the casting number - I've only just started stripping the car down and will continue once I get back home end of next week. I know that the engine was MOVED forward as the previous cowboys in the states wanted to get the clutch assembly out together with starter without removing engine!. They lifted engine slightly over cross member after removing sump, broke the oil pump and smashed the radiator. Well done
Still have to check on all numbers although the paperwork from car state nothing about the engine number.
Don't want to hijack this thread by CanAm17 - will soon start my own thread on the restoration of my Mustang.
Cheers

Re: 66 Mustang 289 - Engine Number
the imported cars that we did, especially mustangs, came without engine numbers.when you apply for a permit, the engine number is same as the chassis number.my idea is that a matching numbers car comes with an engine number stamped on the block with the same as chassis number or similar.it is most likely your car is not a matching numbers car and the engine is an after market 289 motor.aftermarket in the sense that it was replaced.
usa titles or logbooks as we know them do not show engine numbers on them.only chassis numbers
that is my understanding but if i am wrong i apologise

Re: 66 Mustang 289 - Engine Number
Howdy
As mentioned, my 'stangs paperwork does not include the engine number, thus is it not possible to say whether it still has the original motor fitted.
Saying that, my car has been standing for 30 years and most probably had an engine swop at some point. I imported this car from California and have it now in Germany - was a one owner vehicle.
Cheers

Re: 66 Mustang 289 - Engine Number
Mustangs 67 and below never had a Vin number that could be tied up with the engine number. This I believe started in 68 onwards.
So any 67 and under mustang is considered numbers matching if the date code which is cast on the block is within a reasonable time period of the production date of the car.
What you would do is get a Marti report which would tell you when your car was produced to the exact day and then compare your casting date codes to that. Ideally you want them to be 2- 6 weeks prior to the date car was produced for it to be considered a numbers matching block.

Re: 66 Mustang 289 - Engine Number
Thanks for all the replies. We have searched this block for a unique engine number without success. Found the casting number behind the starter motor, but nothing else.
Now the issue is that when the car was taken for registration /police check etc they insisted on an engine number, which is non-existent. We have also heard that pre 67 cars did not have unique engine numbers.
So where to from here in terms of getting this car registered?
