When I lived in S.A. I was called soutpiel, rooinek and engelsman and that was by my Afikaans friends! I always looked at it as a term of endearment.

I think there will always be the English/Afrikaans thing in S.A. and the name calling to go with it but most of the time I found it was not intended to be insulting.

The Boers tendency to 'maak 'n plan' probably has something to do with the term 'Dutchmanising' of things but hell man, they are great at it!!

It most probably depends who says it to you and in what context. If my friends call me a "dutchman" it is funny and seen as a joke. If a stranger called me that I would probably get upset.

This sounds like a case of 'Mexican' vs. 'Spanish' here in the USA but in reverse.

Calling a Mexican 'Spanish' is actually a backhanded compliment since most people from Mexico are Mestizo (White/American Indian mixes) and White supremacy is a huge problem even in that nation.

Now: calling a Spaniard 'Mexican' IS an insult.

Speaking of context, we all know what post this thread refers too.

I wasn't actually upset by the "dutchman" name, I would think us "dutchman" have thicker skin than that, remember the phrase, "Sticks and stones can brake my bones, but names will never hurt me"

What I found surprising, was the suggestion that us "dutchman" in general, don't know style/aesthetics, don't know what generally makes up a good hot rod.

Ok! I got here a bit late, so not going to get into the whole English/Afrikaans debate.

Just food for thought! I am from Belgian descent and my wife is Dutch, we both speak English and Afrikaans fluently. What I find most of the time is that an English speaking person would expect me to speak English because if i spoke Afrikaans they would be lost. I did the effort of learning your language, Don't you think you should extend me the same courtesy?
