Ford Sierra RS50

Post by Danie351 » Sat 09 Feb 2013, 16:25

Hi everyone,
I'm interested in buying a Sierra RS50 but I didn't even know that they existed up until a week ago.
According to the Id plate it was built by Samcor in 1992 and they made use of the XR8 engine, T5 box & Granada diff.
They where also numbered and this is the mark 2 Sierra body.

Does anyone have anymore info on it?

I have not heard of a RS50. Show us some pictures please.

In Europe we had the Sierrra RS500 which was powered by a 2 litre YB Cosworth turbo, and was in the two door Sierra shell. This was the two door shell with a single large rear side window, not the earlier XR4/Merkur shell with the split rear side window.

Great cars, and worth very good money in perfect condition. Unfortunately most of them have been horribly hacked about.

Well with due respect there are many people on this forum who know the factory V8's produced in SA and no material I have around 1992 ever mentioned Ford building something called a RS50, in my humble opinion this sounds like a coversion to me and perhaps the seller is trying to drive up the price on perceived rarity.

I also could not find any evidence of an RS50 produced by Ford, but as John said
only a 4 cylinder version RS500.

I think Jacques is correct with his assumption....

They do exist....from memory, the conversion was done by an outfit in Durban. Nice car to ride in....pretty sure they all came in white with the 5.0 badging being the only outward giveaway...very stealth.....

Your answers are confirming my fears. I don't want to upset the owner or the people who lead me to this car but I have to make sure if its the real deal. On face value the car looks very good but I have only seen it on these pictures.
The Id plate also refers to it as an XR8, so my first thought was that was a very well done re-body attempt. There are also air scoops from an Opel on the bonnet that I don't care for, it has an mechanical fan instead of the electric fan that the XR8 has (owner replaced it) & the seats are not original.
But overall the car looks good and if I do buy it there would be some changes made to return some originality.
Your thoughts please...

John and Alvin are better qualified to comment than me but looking at that vin plate it seems odd that its called an XR8 and was made in 1992, furthermore the kW rating on the VIN plate doesnt seem to relate to how Ford did things thin those days. I seem to recall a car like this being discussed a while back on the forum.

The ones made in Pinetown were done by Grosvenor Ford and I do seem to now very vaguely seem to think they were referred to as RS50, CAR run an article on a Sapphire version in 1991 or there abouts. From what I can recall they were fitted with T5 boxes and a C4 auto was an option.

Irrespective I doubt looking at the time frame it was a factory built car, but looking at the pics it is a nice looking car.

Several conversions were done except for the XR 8's, Grosvenor, Lupini etc.

The engine bay tag and decal on the boot could ver easily have been "home made"

Considering all this, if the car is what its said to be it is very unique (I do not like the word "rare" as its been misused here on the forum  )

What is the asking price Danie?
Greetings
André
