I have met John and I know he is not rushing matters. He is a real quality man and has already spent several months just on the body!!Garage wrote:Not feeling it....guess you're gonna have to show pics too. Nothing personal but from your description I am not expecting to be blown away.....John Doe wrote:My take on this is, it depends on your ultimate objective? If you are restoring a classic or vintage car to original spec, then by all means original wheels should be the way to go. If however you are building a street rod, then you can go wild. I myself am building an El Camino street rod and will be fitting 20" black lenso mags and will drop the suspension (as per Glen's machine). The car already has red EVO racing seats and a B&M megashiffer - sorry to the purists. I am a big fan of Chip Foose.

Thanks for the compliment Johann - I guess each to their own. I have nothing to prove, just expressing an opinion. Nothing personal...
Re: Is it an SA thing??
There you go John - it is all just opinions after all! I wasn't doubting the ability either Johann. Just that (from personal experience) oftentimes the sum of the parts ends up being less than the whole....... no matter the quality of said parts, hours invested or quality of workmanship.
I am not the biggest fan of all Foose's work , but I ABSOLUTELY respect what he has achieved. There is a very good reason why he designs his own wheels.
And probably thousands wishing to emulate him, most with little or no success. Thinking about why that is, is the point I'm trying to get across...

My GT with a dreaded set of "bakkie" wheels
Also has wide tyres, 225 in front and 235 in the back. Do I care what somebody else think? Nahhh, my car I like it!
Opinions differ I guess, should we have a wider variety I might have gone for such, but I like these...

I take your point Barry....but again, I'm not a purist. Just a regular guy who loves old school muscle with a bit of swag.....and I am having lots of fun building my foose wannabe van (red seats and all).

Re: Is it an SA thing??
im all for steelies on old cars, i also dislike wrongly matched rims on cars.Garage wrote:Simple answer Woblz - keep it on steelies....
But of course your car will then be slower. Everyone knows that mehgs make you faster, especially with stupidly low profile tyres that either get lost inside the arch, or are on such stupid diameter rims that the car stands taller than stock. And of course the wider the tacky's (sic) the better too?
Anyone recall Dawie Coetzee's article on this in the old mag - nothing has changed.
And these are people who laugh at ironing boards bolted on the back of ricers.
An eye for form, proportion and flow are sadly missing from most people's vision of what's needed to actually make a car look better, not worse....
custom made rims from OEM rims are also great, widen/pcd change/etc,
pricey but you have a once off.
hows my "bakkie" rims on my capri

Re: Is it an SA thing??
So, the conclusion of the matter is: IT IS AN SA THING!
Some cars are done amazingly, but if you compare with their american brothers( that is what almost everyone wants, to make it look like american street rods) al they need is the right set of wheels and to drop the suspension( most of the nice cars we see have those 18,19 or 20" wheels but they forget to drop it, making it look like a Jeep or a 4x4)
Just my 2c

Some very interesting sentiments here....
I will see if I can get pictures from the new owner of the said Benz wheel, I did this a year ago and sold it with the car unfortunately.
I see that this thread caused some controversy - was threatened off line by someone who I know from the VW scene about dissing the "local style"

Re: Is it an SA thing??
Guys, loooove this topic! would also, however, love to hear various (and probably wildly differing) opinions on 15" Superlites on a 1970 Fairlane? Took a look the other day at the place in Midrand, and I'm seriously tempted by 7s at the front/8s at the back....seems to combine a bit of flair with a fairly retro look. And the car will, of course, go much faster......Currently on stock 14" steelies with the standard hubcaps.....
