Ford 302 V8 with 21R box: Clutch issues

Post by CraigJ » Tue 28 Sep 2010, 11:23

I have a Ford 302 V8 with a 21R Toyota box. The Toyota dyna clutch is on it's last legs and there is a helluva vibration. The vibration is there even when stationery in neutral, so I suspect the flywheel.

My questions are:

Do I replace the clutch and pressure plate with another Dyna clutch?

If not, what is best?

Are my suspicions correct WRT to the flywheel being the vibration culprit?

Lastly who can I take the car to, to do the work because I don't have the tools to do it myself.

There is also a "miss/hesitation" between cruising and full throttle.

TIA

I think Rassie has done a few of those conversions - bit far from Kuis River though - but he may be able to give you some advice.

Is the vibration a new occurence? Or have you just got the motor and box from some where, and it has always vibrated? If vibration has always been there it may be worth checking that you have to correct flywheel for your 302. There are two different types of flywheel with different balance masses.

As a matter of fact there is 3 different flywheels that could fit. The 6 cylinder one is Zero balance and much easier to find but it will kill your bearings in no time.
Check the condition of the damper aswell.

Hi TIA, I had a 75 Ranchero 351W and a Toyota 5-speed gearbox. I used a Dyna 3 ton clutch plate and Mercedes 1311 pressure plate with new holes drilled in the flywheel. All balanced with the crankshaft and pulleys.
I never had a problem for 6+ years of smoking tires and hard work.
I am almost sure you got a F100 straight 6 flywheel with no balance weight.
You have to fit a V8 Ford flywheel to get the vibration to go away.
The picture is from a F100 with no balance weight cast in it.
Rassie.

So I towed the Sapph to work (more tools and space) and got to work over the weekend. Took 2 hrs and some nuckle skin loss with the last 2 bolts on top of the bell housing, but I prevailed and got it all out.

Also discovered that the centre joint rubber on the prop is not rubber anymore.

So my plan of action is to buy new clutch and pressure plate (any recommendations, cos I'm just going to Clutch & Brake round the corner and get LUK versions of what was there.) and have the flywheel balanced with the new clutch.

Buy new centre joint and fit it.

Buy plugs, filter, etc. and drain all fluids incl. diff and box.

Then hold thumbs that one of these was the cause of the vibration.

Craig

Depending on your 302's internals (crank) and damper that flywheel might be your problem normally the late model 302's have a different flywheel ( 50 ounce) that looks like a 28 ounce flywheel

So balancing this flywheel will be a waste of time?
