Post by 72 Stang » Fri 26 Mar 2010, 19:02

Hi Guys
How do I identify a Ford 9" diff and what would a good ratio be for a 460 with C6 auto box, thanks.

Your best ratio will depend on a lot of things , the wheels and tyres , stall speed of the box , the engine characteristics , intended use of the vehicle , wheter you intend to use an overdrive box in the future etc, weight of vehicle etc.
In general , you would find a ratio from 3.25 to 3.5 will give you the best compromise between acceleration and top end , under that will give you better long distance fuel consumption , over that and adding a 2000 stall will give you violent accel and a hugh revving highway speed.
I was running a 3.75 with a 454 and a 9" diff , 295/50/15 tyres - 1500kg vehicle , no stall and it was quite irritating. Considering I was at 280 kw and 700nm torque and a 6000 rpm engine , I went down to a 3.0 , the huge torque of a Big Block coped well , I lost 0.1 sec on the quarter mile , but highway driving was way more relaxed and fuel useage went down.
The nicest thing about smacking your head against the wall is........the feeling you get when you stop!!

howzit
3.25 would be a good allrounder

to identify
cant get to the bottom 2 bolts with a ratchet and extension
must use a spanner

As OldSkool says the bottom two nuts can only be loosened / tightened on a 9" with a spanner. A Ford 8" can be reached by a socket set like the rest of the nuts on the diff centre.

Hope these pics help out.
