Automatic 3L Maxima gearbox problem.

Post by RASSIE » Wed 04 Oct 2017, 07:14

Have we got any member who got experience with these new generation gearboxes?
The car pull strong an all gears but after 1 km the forward stat slipping and felt as if she lost power. I wanted to clean the filter and change the oil but did not find the valve body or filter under the gearbox. To my surprise it was sitting on top the box. Need to remove the battery tray and air filter unit. Way to many wires when I remove the sump. ;)

Rassie,

What kind of ATF does this box use?

Unless it uses the brown DOT6 fluid, that ATF in your picture looks decidedly burned.

It use Dextron 2 but it do not smell burned. I need to get to the filter under the valve body. I have already drained the oil from the bottom of the box but the torque converter got no drain plug.

I strip the valve body but no filter to be seen? I assemble and will start today. If I am not happy I will buy an import box for R.3500+/-.
I like this car as it is super fast and big inside. Strange thing is she pull out my steep driveway as fast as a drag racing car and 2 km later she was starting to slip. Maybe the oil was not enough or incorrect?

Sounds to me like a torque converter issue which only happens when things start to warm up.

At last good news. Radiator got back from a clean and repair. Fit all and airflow box, battery tray and fill with oil. Had to fit a new battery. I took it 10 times on the grass opposite my land and perfect. My son came home and a 10 km drive he came back with a smile. Gearbox running as good as new.
It is one car out the way.
