I heard something about the collar needs to be heated so it can shrink in place on the shaft

Yes the coller must be heated to cherry red then just slipes over the shaft and cooled so it crimps into place.

Just press it on , it's not designed to be heated that's backyard stuff when you have no press available ...

Remember to put the retainer plate on before you install the bearings or you'll have to start over

Heating the collar to cherry red will anneal the steel - ie: make it soft (not what you would like to trust holding your side shaft in place  )
Heat it to about 150 deg and it will expand enough to slip over the shaft and shrink to fit as it cools.
