Trimatic tail shaft play

Post by kavesh » Wed 01 Jun 2016, 17:52

Hi all

I need some advice on how to check for the amount of play on the tail shaft.

If the play is excessive how do I go about fixing it. Is there a bush that needs replacing and is it easy enough for me to tackle on my own.

Any advice appreciated.

Feel the play with propshaft in, with propshaft out there will be lot of play as the bush runs on the propshaft. Dont know how much is ok, mine must be about half a millimeter and the mechanic said is OK, it doesn't leak so the play is not much yet.

Thanks for the reply. Will try with prop shaft in. If it's easy enough to replace maybe a good idea to have it changed while the box is out.

Please let me know how easy it is.
That tail section bolts onto the rest of the box so I presume its gona be easy.

I wanted to replace mine until the mechanic told me to measure the play with propshaft in. If the box is out and no propshaft it feels like there is one hell of a play.

The rear seal was easy to replace on the car without taking box out.

Don't confuse in and out play with side to side ... If that makes sense

That is correct! Kavesh has side play and he needs to get a bush turned that takes up the play!

I replaced the bush and seal on the tail housing. Was not difficult, you just need to be very careful not to damage the new bush as you drive it in.
I had to remove the tailshaft housing in order to do this task. There is a gasket between the box and the tail housing. Interspares told me that there was no gasket there and so did not sell me one. Fortunately the gasket was intact and I added a bit of silicon when I installed it.

I used a socket that was the exact size of the bush to knock out the old bush.
Used a piece of wood to drive in the new bush and then the socket again to get the bush to the correct position.
