Rust stop - Which product?
Hi
I know the only sure way of stopping rust, is to cut out the section, and weld in a new piece.
But in the event that it can't be done, which is the best product to use, to stop rust from spreading or to convert rust?
In our local hardware stores there are various products claiming to be capable, Rust-Oleum, Rust Stop, Plascon's Metalcare Rust Converter, Polycell End Rust, Duram's NS1, RostFort, Sprayon Rust Converter, Hammerite, Dioxidene, etc, etc. In the US, guys seem to be partial to POR-15, don't know if it is available locally.
Which product have you used, and what was your success rate?
Regards

Rust converter does work but the more rust you can remove whether it's wire brush, grinder , spigot etc the better your chances ... It's not majic though you can't just brush it on and forget about it because it doesn't really penetrate layers .. But it the chemical reaction definitely works ... But this depends on how bad it is , heavy rust needs cutting ... Duram I used was decent ..

I used Rust converter and as said, wire brush or sand off as much of the rust as possible and then apply the rust converter. Then apply primer coating. Really works! Rust converter on its own wont last long!!

POR-15 works, PERIOD. I've used it for years. It was designed for marine applications and it does not give out over time. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS TO THE LETTER!!!!! AND....it will out last you.

Re: Rust stop - Which product?
Thanks for the replies thus far.
I'll definitely remove as much rust debris/flakes, as is possible to get to. Might have to drill some holes to scrape and coat from the other side though.
Was it Duram's NS1 you used Jarrod? The NS paints are usually water based, I assume you then also have to use a water-based paint to cover.
Has anyone used Dioxidene?

As I am close to the sea I did many tests. Duram's NS1 need to be apply at least 4 times when each coat is dry. After that!
Now the best secret I found was and tested 10 years in the rain on bare metal. Zinc phosphate primer.
I got a plate in the rain and sea air and NO rust get to the metal. Even Hammerite rust fast!!!

I have used Deoxidene with good results. On flat surfaces like footwells i place Droxidene on the rust and place a couple of layers of paper towel or toilet paper over it. Wet all the paper. Then a shopping bag or plastic so that it can stay wet and not dry out. Leave it for a couple of hours or a day and remove the lot. A lot of rust are removed then. The paper towel is caked with black rust. Where rust is removed the metal turns grey.
On heavy rusted metal when removing the caked paper you sometimes can still see rust that is a rust colour/brown. Reapply untill no brown rust can be seen.

Interesting. I watched a few of those video's and have a question. (See Ghana railway video)
What do the railways of Cape Town and Durban do??
Is there anybody on this site that worked for the railways??
I am going to try and speak to the technical department of our railways (if we have such a thing) to see how they treat our lines.
