Ford 289, lacking peformance, heavy on fuel

Post by jacodebeer » Tue 21 May 2013, 08:51

Hi guys,

Need some technical help
My dads Ford Courier that has a Ford 289 engine, it is quite heavy on fuel (about 3-4 km/l driving nicely), the engine is dead standard fitted with a 600cfm 4barrel Holley.
What do you guys suggest he must do without changing the carb...?

the carb is the culprit so if he dosent want to change that, then hes got to make regular stops at the filling station. If he decides to change it then the 750cfm is the way to go.

If its a double pumper carb , IE 2 accelerator pumps , change it for a vacuum secondary , if it is a vac sec , take it back to standard specs if its been fiddled with or re jetted...

The 600 cfm Holley list 1850 got factory 66 jets. You are over fuelling the engine and it will not have power. As you are close to JHB you can go down to 58 jets. All V8 shops will sell them. This will sort the problem. At the coast I could go down to 62 jets on a 302W. Remember to keep spare bowl gaskets and Vaseline to assemble. Cell: 0822022818 if you do not understand, as I can help.

Hullo Rassie, I went down to 58 on a 305 CID and got a better fuel consumption than on the straight 6. Just don't go over 110 KmH!! :D
Just checked my manual; 67 jets were used on the 327 CID V8 performance engine with the 4150 Holley :!: Definitely too much juice for a 289 engine :?

Good Johann then the 58 will be 100% for the small 289 V8.

Just looking at the picture of the carb, it may also be the choke. Are you sure it is all the way open when it is at temperature?

You are right. My new carb had about a 5mm open position when cold not fully closed

Here is some data on the setting of the 600Cfm Holley for the 327 CID engine. Just shows that the jetting is too big for the 289CID.
Note the position of the choke!! :D
