Jag Suspension
Jag Suspension
Hey guys need abit of advice please. Ive purchased a Jag xj6 suspension for my 1955 Apache restoration and i require the front brake disks as well as the brake pads.....and at the same time i want to change the rear brake disks and pads. i have a quote for all the parts that comes to twice the amount i paid for the whole suspension.
Would i be able to use a brake upgarde kit that might work out cheaper than getting the original parts? Like a Brembo brake kit ( with pads and disks )
And would it fit the suspension i currently have ?.....thats the earlier 3 pot caliper braking system

Re: Jag Suspension
Hi Rowan, The photo doesn't show clearly if the disks are too thin for scimming. They do look smooth, so maybe just a good cleanup can save them. You don't say if you have the original rear drums of the Apachy, or did you fit Jag susp there too? Brake linings can be rebonded at a fraction of the cost of replacing. Just make sure it's done at reputable "brake & clutch" specialists. As for aftermarket upgrades, just look at the adds in any "car" or "speed and sound" magazine. Many choices out there.

Re: Jag Suspension
That's a series 1 XJ6 suspension. Solid discs, Ser 2 / 3 had vented discs. Pads were also different if i remember correctly. Pads and discs were available from spares shops ( Alfa discs ) and Ferodo / Ate pads. Check with Midas/Autozone .
Rear diff had the inboard handbrake and pads. ( overhaul the handbrake mechanisms while the diff is out and make sure they work, quite difficult when diff is fitted ( maybe not on the Apache but still a sh*t job )

Re: Jag Suspension
Pads and discs are service parts. Should be inexpensive - look around in the UK.
For example:

http://britishparts.co.uk/products/7439 ... nt-JLM1510
http://britishparts.co.uk/products/7749 ... ke-JLM1514
http://britishparts.co.uk/products/9952 ... ar-JLM1513
Those are just the first I hit with Google. I am sure that if you shop around you will find them even cheaper.

Re: Jag Suspension
Had a look at my built sheet, to try quantify costs.
Suspension bushes, tie rod ends, shocks, disks pads came to R9300
Resleeving front & rear brake calipers R4400
Recon & re chrome steering rack R2510
Labour R5000, to overhaul, not fit.
That was also 3 years ago, not sure if it helps?

Re: Jag Suspension
Hi Rowan, I am using BMW M535i (81 to85) 4 pot calipers on my 41 Chevy coupe project, they bolt straight on. You need to use the vented discs from a later series Jag. also the Jag. disc is 284mm dia. they must be reduced to 280mm to clear the BM's caliper. I used a 5mm spacer for the widened Jag rims to clear the BM's caliper. See pic's under "Post Your Ride" 41 Chevy Coupe, 09-06-2012.
I had the Jag. & BM calipers completely rebuilt by CBF in Cape Town price R963 & R703 respectively, I did not need brake pads.
The replacement pads for the inboard handbrake are redicilous something like R800, have yours bonded, you only need them while the car is parked anyway. Unless you are doing handbrake turns My 2c worth, Regards Punch.

Hey Guys
Thanks soo much for all the advice . Some real good options here. Will research all of them and see what is the best route to go. Will definately sort all suspension parts before it is installed on the chasis. Handbrake turns are a must gotta have that option
