1965 I was a Specifications Clerk working at the General Motors South Africa plant in Port Elizabeth. This particular Malibu was unique in having a factory painted white top on a red body. This was a "special" and when 43 years later I saw the car standing under a pine tree in Kookrus, I remembered the car and bought it for R3000 and spent about R25000 to bring it back to life. The engine started again with a set of new plugs and points and is running smoothly! It stood for 25 years! I intend to keep it as original as possible with the L6 engine. If I can find the correct hubcaps then the mags will come off immediately as I have the original rims in storage. This car is a classic and you should see other motorists faces when I come cruising past running quietly and smoothly with plenty more on tap! This vehicle is not for sale as it is a labour of love and still has a lot of work to be done. At present it has about six months of work done. This is my technology and am enjoying every minute!
I suspect this is the first Malibu line built in South Africa and may be the only original surviving example! I know of two 1964 Chevelle 300's, one in Cradock and the other in Wolmaranstad. There is also a 1963 Chevelle 64? at Motostar. These are the last of the real American "A" Frame Chevrolets before the Holden, and Ranger era. This is where it all started in South Africa

Re: 1965 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle
Very, very nice Johan
Great to see that you have resisted the temptation to bling it up and have keep it stock instead.
I hope you are going to put that special build white paint back on - I think that would look amazing.
Do you have any pictures of the hubcaps/wheel trims you are looking for? Otherwise we could walk straight past a set in a yard or at an autojumble and not know that they were what you wanted.

Looking for these: http://www.hubcaps.org/cgi-bin/shopper. ... key=chv966
The hubcaps cost more to import from the US than buying a new set of mags (on the Car). I am trying to do a local deal/swap
(edited by John to fix the link)

Great looking Chevelle, amazing how so few of the later 1968 and ownward models have survived....you probably also remember that other oddity of the time, the Acadian Canso and my favorite(I am not sure why) the Beaumont...

Re: 1965 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle
Welcome Johnn, I love your car. Very rare for today's cars. I heven't seen one for years. Cheers Rassie.
Re: 1965 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle
Hullo Rassie,
There are only three RHD Chevelle 300's and one Malibu Chevelle in South Africa that I know of. I have been working on the car for ten months now with a lot of work still to be done. It is having its debutante show on 6 Sep 08.

Here's a recent ad for an Acadian Canso here in Canada..ZA Perana wrote:Great looking Chevelle, amazing how so few of the later 1968 and ownward models have survived....you probably also remember that other oddity of the time, the Acadian Canso and my favorite(I am not sure why) the Beaumont...
A rare combination that although modified is nice some effort has been made for a return to stock configuration..

More pictures Johnn.
Re: 1965 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle
Here are the pictures: The only item that was replaced is the column shift with a Chev Caprice Classic floor shift. It fitted perfectly and has less play than the old shift. All the other parts were hand-cleaned and re-fitted. The mags (new) can swopped for a set of good condition full steel original hubcaps. The idea is keep it as original as possible!
