Welcome Fred.

Geez that is amazing. Is this your first build of a car?

Do you have other interesting cars? What is that little blue sports car with Lola on the side? It doesn't look familiar to me. What engine is in there? Does it race in PE?

In my opinion the Lola T70 GT and Spyder, the Chevron B16 and maybe the Elfin T300 are three of the most beautiful cars made. So you have picked a good choice as a project. Why is your web site .co.uk? Are you looking at possible production runs?

Sorry - lots of questions, but lots of interest.

HI All

Thanks for warm welcome, your kind responses and interest.

"Will it be in Walls Icecream colours with "Stop me & buy one" on the rear spoiler?"
I am currently planning to paint it an old style deep red (somewhere between bright scarlet and oxblood) with a wide centre stripe, nose moustache and sills in silver/grey. I'm not really partial to the Walls livery, but I suppose I could always have a second set of panels to put on for special occasions. That said, long shot, if Walls SA were to come up with some sponsorship, I could have my mind changed.

"Is this your first build of a car?"
I haven’t built a car before, but did build and race lightweight bikes years ago. I also built karts and competed in two stroke karting at regional and national level for 8 years, but in 2004 decided to take a sabbatical so I could devote all my spare resources (time and financial) towards the car project. Also I was getting a bit tired of the apparently obligatory motorsport drama and intrigue between different competitors, and between the competitors, the organizing bodies and other interested parties - the traders etc. This plus the short notice chopping and changing of classes/engines in SA Karting lately has kept me from going back.

I am trained and work as a mechanical engineer and have been reading about motorsport and car design for 20 years, so I am now finally using all that research.

My only other interesting 4 wheel vehicle is this, built for a bit of fun from bits and pieces I had lying around when I got a bit bogged down on the 70.

"What is that little blue sports car with Lola on the side?"
It’s one of three "Heritage" continuation cars, apparently built with authority from Lola some years ago. The body varies slightly from an original in some areas. It is in America. I have not yet personally seen a real (or even replica) T70. I was tipped off that Jean-Michel Martin would be running at Zwartkops and Killarney earlier this year but was unable to schedule a trip to see his car.

"Why is your web site .co.uk?"
Not my website, just a link to the thread with details on my project I posted on the UK Lola Heritage forum.

"Are you looking at possible production runs?"
Since I've been posting details of my project on the Locostbuilders.co.uk and on the GT40s.com forums, I've had 5 or 6 different guys contact me wanting body shells. I would be pleased to sell some shells and make back some of my costs, but I am under no illusions as to how many people will actually stump up money. "Talk is cheap, money buys the whiskey!"

By the time I have a set of moulds I recon I will have spent at least R15 000 on materials, and that includes getting the CAD, Router, and CNC time and the foam material for FREE, not to mention the maybe 600 hours I have spent on the pattern already. Some sources quote 1000 hours for a car body pattern done the old fashioned way, and I can believe it

Cheers

Fred W B
