No I meant that SBK has been before, in fairly recent times.

And how many A1GPs have we had in ZA? Three? A!GP must work or they wouldn't keep coming back. And that is with the extra expense and the disadvantages of a street circuit.

So if we can appeal to one modern international gang, and the international historics gang, surely we can entice the GT guys over here.

John, the A1 and SBK will be at Kyalami next year. Well that's what I've heard.

I am interested to know about the Alfa Romeo sports cars that raced in the Springbok Series. Can anybody tell me who raced the first Alfa sports, what model car, who raced it and when? Are there any photographs of those cars?

Are you talking about in the history of the event or only when it became international?

There was an Alfa Sprint way back in about 1959/60 and later the Tipo 33 and 312 raced as private and works entries. I have pics of both of these.

I can't remember clearly. I know it must have been international because Mike Hailwood was racing. The one Alfa that I remember was a dark blue sports car at Killarney three hours and he spun at Hoals Hoek or was it Quarry? I can't remember well enough now.

I want to know which Alfa sports cars raced in the big international Springbok Series, not the little GT's and when was it that these proper sports cars first raced.

I am sure it was the Tipo 33.....a good few years ago one was rescued from an Angolan scrapyard, this car has been 100% restored and races in Europe.

Apologies for the slip. The 312 was of course Ferrari.

The Alfa Tipo 33 I think only raced once in this country, being in the 1968 9hr at Kyalami. It was a private entry for Teddy Pillette and Rob Slotmaker who crashed out during the race.

The car did not do the Springbok series, only the 9hr.

The first time I saw this car was at the Piper races a couple of years ago.

Here is a pic of Pillette at Nurembergring in 1969 in a P33. I have a feeling this was a longer tailed and updated version of the T33, but I am not an Alfa fundi.

My friends, I have to apologise, I have been sitting racking my mind about this Alfa story and you are right. I have got confused with another car. I am sure it had a BRM engine in it. My mind isn't very clear anymore.

Fairlane, I'm sure you are getting confused with the Nomad MK3 BRM. This car was raced by Mark Konig and Paul Vestey in the 1970 Cape Three hour race and as far as I can remember it was dark blue. Also I am sure it spun out at Hoals, so you must have been close to us!

I dug out a picture of a MK3 being raced in the UK in 1999.
