Does anyone remember...........
Does anyone remember...........
....John Metcalf, who used to drive a pretty quick red and yellow Cortina? He would have been driving at the same time as Roy Van Der Sandt.
Or Cherry Crisp who drove a Dart in the early 60's? She would have been around at the same time as Koos Swanepoel when he was still driving the Dart Motors Anglia. Was she the first lady driver in Cape Town, I wonder?

Re: Does anyone remember...........
Remember hearing about John Metcalf from I think uncle Koos Swanepoel.
Never saw him race that I can remember.
Only got to Killarney for the 1st time in 1966 or 1967.
Another Cortina racer from the era I do remember was Dr Jan Loubser.
He was a medical doctor in Wolesley and I remember him some sort of W P championship in the 60's.

Jan Loubser, I remember him well. Had a moustache if I remember correctly and he drove a dark blue and white Anglia, same colour as Koos' car and that of Brian Von Hage. He did win a WP Championship in about 1965.

Re: Does anyone remember...........
......when Brian Von Hage broke his half shaft while coming out of Hoals and he rolled the car? This was a pity because he had just upgraded a very fast Anglia and we were hoping he was going to give the big boys a run for their money.
Check this out..........

I was there the day von Hage rolled the Anglia.
A clear illustration why MSA insists on full rollcages in most race classses.

I was pee'd off that day. When I was standing next to his wreck, von Hage didn't want to sign an autograph for me. Wonder why............
Remember Elize Swanepoel racing the green Cortina GT?

Brian von Hage was also one of the drivers when the Gunston F2 Chevrons were involved in the accident after the start of the first F2 race in SA. Just can't recall whether Peter Gethin's, John Love's or Brian von Hage's car rolled... he was a very good driver ... what has happened to him... still with us? .. or been called to the great Racie Meeting in the sky?

Re: Does anyone remember...........
He was a very good driver. He ran the Shell garage opposite Pennypinchers but on the opposite side of Koeberg Road while he was racing. I think he called it Killarney Motors. Then he disappeared.
In 1995 I purchased a Toyota from Market Toyota in Claremont. The guy who sold me the car was Jean-Pierre Von Hage. Me being who I am, started asking questions. This guy is Von Hage's son and apparently his dad just lost interest and went off to Philidelphia (Cape) to do pig farming. He has done very well at it and hasn't sat in a race car since then.

Is it sort of a tradition that racing drivers name their sons "Jean-Pierre"?... isn't Serge Damseaux's son also called the same?
