Oval track history
Re: Oval track history
Now that I think of those days, some chilly night's at Goodwood sometimes you asked yourself why did I go ? But amongst this sometimes rough crowd there were some real characters WWF Wrestling only happened long after Goodwood stockcar days.
Never forget when Dup Du Plesis threw his toys out the cot after a race and went straight across the infield to take somebody out. Then we could'nt wait for the next meeting.
Or after a heat the cars would pull in and pitmacs would all rush to a car and sometimes even a pow-wow in the pits.
The Sprint cars were for me the most exciting. When Ettiene Kitching rocked up with that yellow Gurney Eagle motor's rod phew, those okes had ball's. That rod having been built from a Mclaren race car (ex-Olthoff) or was it the single seater race car.
Then there was Robert Sceppel I think he still has that inhected motor at his garage. These okes had some serious cars those days.
One of Deon De Waal's sprint cars was standing at Johnny Clifton's scrapyard in Salt River years ago. My friend that beat me on my bike with his Can Am bought it think for R 500 no motor and box. It then went to another person who put a 308 in it and raced for a while can't rmember his name. Todat that would be a bit of nostalgia even if could be restored and displayed as they looked rather primitive compared to todays rods.

100% , Ettiennes rod was a chopped up Mclaren Formula 5000!, i ended up with the steering wheel of that car and somewhere have a picture of me running around with it,at the time i was only a few bricks high!
Interestingly enough THAT rod motor of Robert is fitted into a Hudson sedan which he is building into a street rod!, saw the car last week.

RACECAR spelt backwards spells RACECAR.....

Hi Raymond,
Welcome to the forum, pop over to the New Members Intro index and tell us about yourself.
This is quite an old thread and some of the photos don't load so lekker.
But this thread pays a lot of respect to stockcar racing at Goodwood with legends and characters of the Cape Helldrivers, and refers to the kind of action one experienced there, as seen below.
The forum has grown so much over the years, I wonder if there are members (old and new) who may have found more stockcar photos not seen on the forum before? If so, let's see them....

Re: Oval track history
Someone still needs to be shot for doing that. Since Goodwood closed down, I've been to a total of 3 meetings at Killarney oval. Just doesn't do it for me like it did back in the old days. Anyway life moves on and the memories will live with me forever. The top 10 tour was probably one of the highlights of my involvement with my brother.farrell wrote:and if someone could explain to me why the showgrounds where closed.
Re: Oval track history
Only been to Killarney Oval once since CHD moved there, hardly missed a Goodwood evening. Many times there would be a Killarney circuit race afternoon and stockies there after at Goodwood. Sadly that is all gone now there was a nice social side to motoring those days.
That yellow Datsun coupe your uncle had Lionel had was Mannetjie's road car before he sold it went to Lional. Lovely 1600 or 1800 SSS coupe. I worked with Mannetjies before he left our company.

Re: Oval track history
Unashamedly I still sleep in this T-shirt in winter from time to time. (It's getting a bit thin after more than 15 years)
Re: Oval track history
Correction was thinking of some other SSS it was indeed a 4-door SSS as shown on Datti's T-shirt.VMX wrote:That yellow Datsun coupe your uncle had Lionel had was Mannetjie's road car before he sold it went to Lional.
