Hi all,

Nice meeting you down at the track Hi-Fi. It was a bit hairy out in the wet in our last race, but a lot of fun. The playing fields are leveeled to some extent in the wte and the orangey Charade seems to keep up a bit better. Went well in first race, but had a bit of a miss on turns 3 and 4 in second. We think one of the plug leads was coming loose. Not good to lose one cylinder when you only have three. Anyhow, good meeting all the same. Its always a blast and the car is very reliable. Like the pics of the R8's. Particularly like Jody Scheckters white one with blue stripe. Pity my one is already blue with white stripe and white roof. More like Scamp Porters. Will update photos to show how it looks now at some stage.

Hi all, Just that sand bank separated the cars overshooting Hoals and the short straight from Duchams to Malmsbury Sweep.
With the sand bank removed and the wall with tyres infront make the area look larger that it really is. I cant see that the orginal track was altered.

The spectator fences seem to me that they have been shifted back.

Hi diecast

I see what you mean by that photographer diving for cover! I guess he had to be escorted to the nearest longdrop after that incident! Thanks for sharing that pic.

It just gues to show how danderous Killarney was in those days, which wasn't that long ago. Mind you I guess 30 odd years is long ago! It was crazy having that bank there to act as ramp which could easily have launched the car into the crowds.

Diecast... If I remember correctly George van Straten once went over that sandbank and ended up on the straight during practice in his Formula Ford... something at the back of my mind tells me that his car was sponsored by one or other of the supermarket groups at that stage, might have been Travenna or something.

Jody Schechter again lost his Chevron during one of the 3 hours, coming out of Malmesbury and ended up among the trees after scalling the sandbank at the exit, the same one John McNicol just about missed when he lost it also coming out of Malmesbury in his McClaren. Rowwe dae gewees.

I sometimes wonder what today's Prima Donna's would have said, had they seen the track (Killarney) in the 70's... might have decided to refuse to race.. but then again, in those days men were men , boys were boys and the rest just played at home with their toys.

I don't even think that safety was considered as important as the fact that they raced for the love of it and would let nothing stop them from getting on the track... hulle was rof... once saw Mike "The Bike" Hailwood actually smoking in the pits, nogal next to his car, while the mechanic was refuelling it..... ja... die manne was rof in die ou dae. .. or the day Tony Martin refused to race in the F2 race till his fellow competitors had their cars ready... real sportmen and gentleman....

I love the description Pampoen Karre for those little orangy cockroachs, they do seem to "Scamp"er around the track like cockroachs. nearly out reach. Considering that they are only 3cyl normally aspirated carb feed models. #114 is nearly1300cc while # 83 is just short of 1000cc.
Getting back to the string. Here is photo of two R8 Gordinis taken at a Wheels Show (Panarama Primary School) a few years ago. I can not remember to who owned the Racing car, I think the Gentleman was into rubber remoulding (suspension bushes Etc) I have some other pics of Brian Munder's 12 " Gordini" in that Bright Renault Yellow mark Smith's R8, Johan Bam in his R10 and then some Joburg Renos 8G,8 with crazy air scopes on the rear arches, 10 and a very widened 5 The Joburg Photos where all taken by the late Louis Gouws of Racelines fame of which I have 2 books.

Hi guys, nice to know somebody else takes photos of the back of the field. Maybe in 40 yrs time the photos will turn up on a web forum somewhere, just like some other race cars around???. I must say that the cars do attract a bit of attention. I was toying with the idea of changing the colour, but they have been that "kapoen" colour since they were built and they have been around for eons, so I think the orange will stay. In the meantime here are some more pics of my R8 as it currently is.
