No that Jag from the Manufacturers Challenge who knows may exist somewhere still OR was cut up for it's suspension fora kit-car Cobra or something ZA style.

The one Mike Moore raced I have photo's of it quite a while before they really got the thing fast. In the beginning it may have had a six still not sure. That car could have ended up in Jo'burg or elsewhere as quite a few of these local built specials ended up at other circuits where they could be acommodated in their races too.

The BvR Fiat was also raced by Dave Charlton at some stage remember seeing that thing fly at Killarney when it had no brakes. You can see his Fiat all red in the other pic just behind Mortimer's whilte/blue Chevair. It had perspex type pannels creating a fastback profile so that it did'nt so much change the overall profile of the car visibly. That was for aerodynamics I imagine.

Sarel's Escort I remember going full sideways around Hoals chasing the more powerfull cars then it snapped a halfshaft as it grabbed after touching some dirt. That picture posted is exactly how he went through Hoals at Killarney right through the corner. Exactly like that screaming.

Few things here I went to check up on my own information as Mr. Knowall ! This time I must say my memory is sort of still in good tune. i probably say things that are not always entirely acurate as I hardy go fetch or look for a magazine as I did now before i say what's on my mind.

The Chevair of Mortimer's which was built from the No.3 Dealer Team Can Am mechanicls ran 1 min 20's and set a lap record in May 1979 which is the same meeting I was at which I read in this old SA Motor report of mine. My point is that the car was more radical than the Can Am's but still less than our present day Historics, ran a 302 which even if it had IDA's probably less than reliable hp you can say was an improvement on the Can Am's 1 min 22,5 6 years earlier. Plus don' forget the track was narrower and bumpier then. Hnce maybe our Historics don't need in excess of 500 horsepower now.

The Fiat as I remember seeing it and how I tried to explain have a look at this scanned pic from the same Killarney event in 1979.

The Escort incident quote from the report in this race report:

"At the 180' Hoals Hoek he(Sarel) gave an ample demonstration of his talents, throwing the Escort into the corner, and then holding the car on the power all the way round in a perfect powerslide at an angle of 45 degrees to the direction of travel!"

"He went out at Quarry with a broken half shaft after six laps effectively ending the Ford challenge. Next the car apears it will be powered by a 3,4 litre Cosworth Ford V6 engine ....."

That's the next time I saw it when it had a V6 standing at Jukskei in my Army step-outs when he pranged with Shekter.

Has anyone come up with a driver for the Jag that raced in the Manufacturers Challenge yet. This is bugging me, because if I can't remember, it may be that I am getting old :?

With the huge knowledge on this forum, SOMEONE must know....... Ask a friend, or an aunt, or someone....

Who has old Motoring Mirror mags? Must be there.

You guys wondering why Mike's Jag was so fast ? Well here's part of the answer besides he being a driver of note himself. Was it Les Johnson that was behind this rave car ?

Come on Lino

Who drove the Manufacturers Challenge Jag at Kyalami?

Don't keep us in suspense!

Its a long weeken to wait.

The Black Autoquip Jag was built and prepared by Les Johnson. Originally it ran a very quick 4.2 six cylinder Jag engine and later the very potent 350 Chevy.

Les now lives in George or Knysna and prepares the ex Adrian Pheiffer APM for its new U K owner. Thats the car Jess drove in Feb at the Classic Races.

Henry this time I was really depending on you. I'm stumped but if I hear the name I'll say ja I knew it but could'nt remember !

I'll have an answer before next week if nobody else can solve this. It was a 164 six cylinder if i remember correctly.
