Tony Vianna BMW 745i
Re: Tony Vianna BMW 745i
Those Beemers were very special. Do you remember when the very first 530 came out? This was big news then.
Re: Tony Vianna BMW 745i
Those white 530's with the stripes ? Had a direct 5th I think sprty gearbox. I'd say also a homologation sort of car.

Yep they had the dogleg first gear boxes - magazine road testers complained because the zig zag shift into 2nd hurt the 0-100 km/h times, but BMW know what they were doing - no one needs first round a track

That 'dogleg' first gear BMW box is very nice, i had it in my Ascona 400 racecar...
as you rightly say, you don't need 1st around a track thus making 2nd to 5th a 'normal' H pattern. Whats also nice (and in my opinion much better than the ever popular 21R Toyota box) is that the 5th gear is 1:1...no overdrive - perfect for racing. Only hassle is these boxes are becoming really scarce,i still got 1 i am hanging onto for a future project......

There are parts of the topcar article on the 530mle on the main site. That is really a milestone car. I wonder how many are left?

Some more of the Vienna car taken about a month ago at Phakisa. This car is unbelievably preserved and entertained the crowed on a demo run this day. I'm not a BMW fan but this car surely brought back some memories!

I assume this is the Gunston Painted 535 that you mention.nick sheward wrote:The Gunston 535 was stripped by Fat Arnie in Welkom to build the white CSL replica which now belongs to Johan van Heerden. The body of the Gunston 535 was cut up. There was a second spare early 535 body lying around in the workshop when Tony sadly passed away. This car was never raced by Tony and was never completed as a car by him.
It was completed by one of his ex mechanics. Raced in green and then white and is now in VD Bijl Park in Gunston colours. Does not have any "good" bits and runs a M5 motor.
The 535 in the picture is one of the two original cars built by Owen Ashley. It had cantilever rear shocks. Tony was not happy with that car and he built another car that season with a more conventional race suspension. That is the Winfield car you speak of.
Cheers!
