Morning.Stripped the xr8 engine and this is the carnage we found. One very broken piston and two more cracked.Bearings look ok though as the crank has been chamfered etc.Rather than take any chances i'm fitting a full set of new pistons and bearings + doing a pressure test + skim on the heads. This circuit racing seems to be a lot harder on engines than drags. The pistons should be here by monday so it will be running sometime next week.Hopefully we'll make it for the next race on 8 june.

I've been running the same motor in my car for the past 4 years MrRay and all I did was replace head gaskets twice.
I don't want to talk about the reliability or (un)reliability of the chevy but when a chevy blows, it really destroy itself. Collins engine is the original motor that came with that car in 1984 and it still went around the track without ending up on a tow truck. a new set of pistons and he's ready to run.
BTW a ford does not need nitrous to make it go

Hey Ray,remember this car?12.3 sec quarter mile n/a on a 302 with stock cast iron heads, stock pistons and pump fuel. What was your best time without the blue bottle? How about an all-motor challenge.I was going to leave my capri on the back burner for now but i think i'll put it together if you accept ,although i'm pretty sure you won't.
btw, my new motor will definitely go a few tenths quicker so don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

Morning

Fine car racing at killarney was really good yesterday. My rebuilt engine gave no problems whatsoever and the cooling is fully sorted. The problem now is that after two laps just when the tyres start to get sticky the brake pedal goes almost all the way to the floor.I reckon 5.1 racing brake fluid and braided hoses should help in the next race. The car ran 1 min.36 seconds but i feel low thirties are quite possible when the brakes are sorted and i learn to drive a bit better. Thanks Tony (killarney racer) for a good run in the second heat. I definitely have the legs on the straight but you totally destroy me in the bends. Maybe next time.

Cheers

Colin, get your hands on AP 600 brake fluid. Expensive, but worth it. Dave Sinclair in Strand (021) 854 6331) is the local agent as you cannot fly it from JHB and it has to come down road freight Alternative would be fluid from Performance Friction. Are you running any cooling ducting to your discs? Also a big help.

Thanks CanAm.I will definitely get it from them.Did not think i would need brake ducting in fine cars but i was clearly wrong because speeds on the straights are pretty high.We do have some aluminium flexible ducting that i could use. This is the kind of advice that can only come from race experience.Thanks.

Pity they dont have a race fluid for the driver to improve my cornering ability.
