48 Chev Fleetline (216) - water pump seal

Post by Garage » Fri 05 Sep 2014, 06:14

I need to replace the water pump seal (just did the bearing, was hoping the seal was still good) in time for Speedweek....
Anyone know of any local options?

Sorry if its a dumb response, but wouldn't you be able to get the bearing seal from a bearing supplier as well?

Match it up to a Bearing Man / BMG seal, that's what I did with the International.

Mechanical seal sizes don't differ that much, and Bearing Man stocks a wide range.

Does this mean that I could change the bearing on my noisey water pump rather than replacing the unit?

Can one buy a kit to overhaul these water pumps?

Sorry to hijack the thread

There are complete kits available for some pumps from overseas suppliers.

But much quicker, and depending on the construction of the water pump, most of the old water pumps are rebuildable with parts from BMG.
In some cases light machining is required.

Haven't specifically worked on a 216 Chev.

Thanks guys.
There seems to be a problem with the new bearing too  - stripped this thing twice now
There is more play in the bearing than what I believe is acceptable. I've found another pump locally which I will pick up Monday. Also hopefully I can get a new one brought over from Oz with a friend coming out for Speedweek.
Once I have one on the car that works I'll pull the seal and see if there is a local option, though I spoke with a restorer who said he had to make his own....

Hi Garage I know the owner(Lal) from bearing and seal center in Jacobs(Durban) and he told me he can get any seal or bearing made if it is not available.
If it come to push I would even turn a bush to make it work. :D

Try John Crane SA in Beaconvale CT for the mechanical seal. they have a good range of imperial seals with ceramic wear rings.

Thanks guys. I seem to have come right with other pumps. The bearing I found at BMG is a piece of crap with substantial play. Unfortunately they only seem to carry the one brand, as the salesman said 'well its a China bearing, so unfortunately you get what you pay for'

nOW If anyone has a local lead on some 10mm sparkplugs, that would be great!

Which spark plug you looking for?
Do you have a make and number on old spark plug or model of engine?
I can look up in my plugs catalogue.
