AC Cobra value

Post by Gunter » Tue 06 Mar 2012, 18:31

The AC Cobra in a previous post just reminded me about something....

had a guy from Durban contact me yesterday, he wants to trade his AC Cobra in on my '70 Camaro , the pics look great, has a 302 Ford in it, its a Shamrock kit. My question is what is the realistic selling price of an AC Cobra(not asking price, what do Cobra's actually trade/sell for - normally a big difference between cars asking and actual selling price!!) - i don't want to burn my fingers and end up with something that i am stuck with....

Cobra prices differ big time, as does the build quality, kits and components used. An intery Cobra from Backdraft with Lexus V8 goes for R330 000 and up to R500 000 with New Mustang Coyote motor.

But... I would not swop a Camaro for a Cobra!!

Gunter, there are very few local "Cobra's" that would be a fair swop for your Camaro

Sorry, i didn't make my initial post very clear....the guy wants to 'trade in' the Cobra on my Camaro - so the Cobra AND money - in my opinion ALOT of money needs to come with the Cobra!

i agree with you guys the new back draft cobras have the e36 bmw suspension in it and more leg room fun to drive but the old jag setups kills your back and kidneys imagine driving in a wheel barrow for 10km....there are loads of cobras out there and you see them a lot on the road but the 70's Camaro are getting scares...food for thought :)

I was looking at Cobra's awhile back and the stuff I encountered had that kit car build quality, never really finished or well thought out, just a mix up of bad parts stuffed into a kit car with the most awfull ride. Maybe the newer stuff is better, but to me they are just kit cars, fun, maybe fast, definitely not comfortable, but no where as cool as a 70 Camaro.

Difficult to say what the value is on the Cobra unseen. It depend on a lot of things such as built quality, paint finish, interior, engine, wheels and a lot more.
If you intend keeping the Cobra I'd strongly suggest you take this car for a long drive, at least 300km before making a decision. Once you have done that trip I think you will have a different view of the Cobra's. They are not that comfortable, very noisy and damn hot in summer.
Think 4 times before letting go of the Comaro, I wouldnt do it.
Yes its an eye catcher (Cobra that is) but not much more to it than that.

Only my penny worth....you be the judge!!

Always hard to say. depends a LOT on how much trouble the builder has taken, both in terms of wormanship and 'accuracy'.

Shamrock is one of the better kits.

Here in UK cobras of that sort of spec are around £15K = R180K.

There are two Shamrocks on sale in ZA at present, one at R200K and one at R230K. Those are asking prices, so my guess is - if it is a good car - R180K to R200K
