I this I know this car fairly well. It was Cape Town based for quite a long time.

You are spot on. We were just as confused after sanding the paint down to reveal the strut number. Does anyone know why?

The numbers were hand stamped in the factory so it was probably just a mistake on the part of the stamper, he had the stamp upside down.
I have looked at many of these chassis numbers and they are all over the place, so no kind of jig was ever used.

Yes, and even the font sizes varied. It seems whatever came to hand on the day was used.
